Google Supports Indonesia’s Efforts to Strengthen Child Protection Laws

Indonesia is set to enforce stricter regulations to protect children from harmful online content, including child pornography and online gambling. Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, announced the initiative following a meeting with YouTube’s Vice President of Public Policy, Leslie Miller, on February 10, 2025, at Google’s Paris office.

“We expect Google’s cooperation in ensuring a safer online environment for Indonesian children,” said Meutya.

The urgency for regulation arises from rising cases of child pornography and online gambling in Indonesia. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Indonesia ranks among the top four countries with the highest number of child pornography cases. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) reported that 2% of online gamblers—around 80,000 players—are under 10 years old.

Acknowledging these concerns, Leslie Miller reaffirmed Google's commitment to child safety. “We are ready to collaborate with the Indonesian government to ensure our platform remains safe for all users, especially children,” she stated.

This meeting marks a crucial step in the partnership between the Indonesian government and global digital platforms to enhance child protection in the digital space.
