Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) to cooperate on the peaceful uses of nuclear technology (17/08).
The agreement supports the development of capabilities to assess the potential deployment of nuclear energy, MTI said.
The MOU was signed by MTI Permanent Secretary (Energy & Trade) Augustin Lee and CAEA Vice-Chairman Liu Jing.
Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) Dr Tan See Leng and CAEA Chairman Shan Zhongde witnessed the signing.
Singapore-China Nuclear Technology Cooperation Covers Reactor Assessments
The MOU will support capability-building partnerships between Singapore and China. It is also part of Singapore’s recent engagements with international partners, including the United States, France and South Korea.
The cooperation includes safety and technical assessments of nuclear reactor technologies. It will also support Singapore’s efforts to develop independent capabilities to make an objective and technical assessment of the potential deployment of nuclear energy.
Agreement Covers Nuclear Safety, Training and Technology Applications
The partnership areas covered by the MOU include manpower training and scientific visits.
It also covers public education, communications and engagement, as well as nuclear safety, safeguards and security.
Nuclear technology applications are another area included in the cooperation between Singapore and China.
Singapore Prepares for IAEA Review in 2027
The engagements with international partners will contribute to Singapore’s preparations for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) Phase 1 Mission, which is scheduled for 2027.
The INIR is a voluntary assessment by the International Atomic Energy Agency for countries considering nuclear power to support responsible development.
