Tencent has opened applications for CarbonX 2.0, a global initiative aimed at supporting the development of carbon reduction technologies. The program provides funding and testing facilities to innovators contributing to the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
CarbonX 2.0 is open to universities, research institutions, and startups with pilot projects that have the potential for global implementation. This year, the program is available in seven countries, including Indonesia.
Sean Bunjamin, Head of Programs at Impact Hub Jakarta, emphasized the need for technology-driven solutions to achieve net zero emissions. "CarbonX 2.0 is a golden opportunity for Indonesian startups, research institutions, and universities to showcase their talent to the world," he said.
Selected projects will receive a minimum of $1 million in funding. Winners will also gain mentorship from industry experts, access to specialized resources, and the opportunity to test their innovations through Tencent’s global network of partners.
The program focuses on four key areas:
- Carbon Removal: Technologies to extract historical carbon emissions from the atmosphere.
- CCUS for the Steel Industry: Solutions for capturing, utilizing, and storing carbon in the steel sector.
- Long-Duration Energy Storage: Innovations that improve the use of renewable energy in power grids.
- CarbonXmade: The integration of captured carbon into chemical production and consumer products.
Applications for CarbonX 2.0 are open until May 2025, with selection taking place in two phases. The first phase (by September 2025) will shortlist 10 to 15 teams per category. The second phase (by February 2026) will select 1 to 3 winners from each group.
Winning teams will receive funding and additional resources to develop and implement their projects. A panel of experts from academia, industry, and finance will evaluate all applicants based on innovation, potential impact, and feasibility.
CarbonX 2.0 was introduced at the Sustainable Social Value Innovation Summit in Beijing, an event that brings together industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to discuss accelerating sustainability-driven innovation.
