Indonesia Partners with Toyota to Advance Low-Emission Vehicles

The Indonesian government, in collaboration with industry players and academia, is intensifying efforts to achieve net-zero emissions through renewable energy. In the automotive sector, the sales of electrified vehicles (xEV), including Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), increased by 60% in 2024 compared to the previous year. This surge indicates growing consumer interest in eco-friendly transportation.

"Decarbonization strategies through technological innovation and the green industry concept are now essential. Beyond the green industry, achieving carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions is also within reach," said Setia Diarta, Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industries (ILMATE) at the Ministry of Industry, during the "Beyond Zero: Carbon Neutrality (CN) Mobility Event" in Jakarta on Wednesday (February 12, 2025).

One of the automotive companies spearheading carbon neutrality is Toyota Indonesia. Through the "Beyond Zero: Carbon Neutrality (CN) Mobility Event," Toyota showcased Indonesia's transition towards carbon neutrality, aiming to minimize the negative impact of carbon emissions on both the industry and society.

The Indonesian government welcomed Toyota's initiative, recognizing it as a significant step toward emission reduction. The event demonstrated that Toyota is committed not only to business growth but also to fostering a sustainable and globally competitive industrial ecosystem.

"We hope Toyota will introduce new production technologies that generate lower emissions. Additionally, we encourage Toyota Indonesia to continue innovating beyond carbon neutrality," Setia added.

Masahiko Maeda, Chief Executive Officer of Toyota for Asia Region, stated that Toyota remains committed to supporting Indonesia's economic growth by playing an active role in the automotive sector and its supply chain. This includes investments, job creation, improving trade balance, and increasing local content ratio (LCR) for over 50 years.

"Economic progress must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility. This is why we proudly introduce a triple-helix collaboration involving the government, industry, and academia to illustrate a multi-pathway technological strategy aligned with diverse energy resources and infrastructure," Maeda said.

At the event, Maeda invited key stakeholders to collaborate, exchange insights, and contribute to building an ecosystem that supports Indonesia's decarbonization efforts.

The "Beyond Zero: Carbon Neutrality (CN) Mobility Event" runs from February 12 to 15, 2025, at Gambir Expo, Central Jakarta. Visitors can test drive various eco-friendly vehicles featuring multiple technological pathways, including low-emission, high-tech vehicles powered by sustainable fuels.

"From biofuels and flex-fuel technology to hybrid electric vehicles, battery electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell technology, the Beyond Zero concept demonstrates Toyota's commitment to pushing innovation boundaries while promoting a pragmatic and holistic approach toward a green, low-carbon ecosystem for all Indonesians," Maeda emphasized.

Collaboration with the Ministry of Industry

The event is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Industry and Toyota Indonesia, serving as a prelude to the Annual Indonesia Green Industry Summit (AIGIS) 2025. The summit, scheduled for August 20-22, 2025, at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC), will further promote green industry transformation.

In 2024, the inaugural AIGIS attracted over 1,000 visitors from various sectors, particularly those involved in green industry development.

Apit Pria Nugraha, Head of the Green Industry Center at the Ministry of Industry, explained that AIGIS is Indonesia's first government-led carbon neutrality event focusing on energy utilization. "Building on the enthusiastic public response, AIGIS will continue as an annual platform addressing sustainable environmental issues on both national and global levels," Apit said.

The Ministry of Industry launched AIGIS 2025 on December 18, 2024. The event provides strategic collaboration opportunities for the government, industry, strategic partners, and international organizations, reinforcing the ministry's commitment to national industrial decarbonization.
