Government Initiates Free Mental Health Screening Program for All Citizen

Indonesia Introduces Free Mental Health Screening for All Citizens

In a significant move to address mental health issues nationwide, the Indonesian Ministry of Health has announced the launch of a free mental health screening program for all citizens, set to commence in February 2025.

Scope and Objectives

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin emphasized that this initiative is among the largest undertaken by the government, aiming to reach approximately 280 million people. The primary goal is to identify and address mental health concerns early, thereby reducing the prevalence of mental health disorders across the nation.

Implementation Strategy

The screening will be conducted at 10,000 community health centers (puskesmas) and 15,000 clinics nationwide. The program will focus on three critical health parameters: blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. Additionally, the initiative will incorporate mental health assessments to provide a comprehensive health evaluation.

Target Demographics

The screenings will be organized based on individuals' birthdays, with specific attention to children under five, adults, and the elderly. For children up to 18 years old, screenings will be conducted at schools to ensure accessibility. This approach aims to ensure that all age groups receive appropriate health evaluations.

Digital Integration

To enhance accessibility and efficiency, the Ministry will utilize a digital system for the program. Participants will receive their screening results via WhatsApp, similar to the method used for sharing PCR test results during the COVID-19 pandemic. This digital approach aims to streamline the process and ensure timely delivery of health information.

Mental Health Focus

Minister Sadikin highlighted the importance of mental health screening, noting that many individuals may not recognize their mental health issues. By integrating mental health assessments into the screening program, the government aims to raise awareness and provide necessary support to those in need.
