Meta has announced a new video editing app called Edits, designed to provide professional-grade tools for creators. This launch comes in the wake of CapCut, ByteDance’s video editing app, being removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store following the TikTok ban.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, revealed the upcoming app through a Threads post. He stated that Edits would be available on iOS next month, with an Android release following later. Mosseri emphasized that the app is designed specifically for creators passionate about video content, ensuring they have the best possible tools to enhance their work.
“Today we’re announcing a new app called ‘Edits,’ for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone. There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators,” Mosseri wrote.
The app will feature an array of creative tools, including a dedicated tab for inspiration, a section for tracking ideas, and a high-quality camera. Additionally, creators can share draft versions with collaborators and gain insights into how their videos perform on Instagram once published. This focus on creators rather than casual users aims to differentiate Edits in a competitive market.
Meta has a history of stepping into gaps left by competitors. When TikTok was banned in India in 2020, the company quickly launched Instagram Reels, a short-video platform that gained traction globally. Similarly, Threads was introduced in 2023 as a competitor to text-based platforms like X. The introduction of Edits aligns with Meta’s strategy to capitalize on market uncertainties, particularly as creators seek alternative tools in the absence of CapCut.
The timing of this launch is critical. Other competitors, such as the a16z-backed app Captions, have also pivoted to a freemium model to attract users and challenge CapCut’s dominance. With Edits, Meta is positioned to capture the attention of creators seeking versatile and reliable editing tools.
As Mosseri mentioned, Edits is tailored “more for creators than casual video makers,” signaling Meta’s intention to target professionals in the content creation space. This strategy could give Meta an edge in securing loyalty from creators, especially during this period of market disruption.
