Ocean, a Tokyo-based startup focused on decarbonization, has announced an ambitious project to produce biofuel in Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTT), Indonesia. The company has formed a consortium with EnvMission, a local startup collaborating with regional government authorities to drive this initiative forward.
The project aims to convert approximately 60,000 tons of organic waste into 20,000 tons of biochar annually through a process known as pyrolysis. This biofuel will serve as an alternative to coal for trading and steel companies, supporting a shift towards more sustainable energy sources.
Design plans for the production facility are set to begin next year, with operations expected to commence by 2027. The environmental impact of this initiative is significant, with estimates suggesting a reduction of over 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions per year. Furthermore, the local economy could benefit from an estimated increase of over 200 million yen annually from the plant's operations.
In addition to direct job creation linked to the facility, the project is expected to foster indirect employment throughout the supply chain, providing a substantial boost to the local economy. Ocean will oversee sales, finance, and other operational aspects, while EnvMission will focus on local development and management within the consortium.
The launch of this biofuel project underscores Ocean's commitment to advancing sustainable practices and addressing the pressing issue of climate change while simultaneously promoting economic growth in the NTT region.
