Dementia, a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder among the elderly, poses significant challenges globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports approximately 55 million individuals worldwide living with dementia, with projections indicating an increase to 78 million by 2030. In Indonesia, the rising prevalence of dementia, coinciding with an aging population, has become a pressing public health concern. Studies suggest that 40% of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed through effective management of risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and other unhealthy habits.
Despite these findings, public awareness in Indonesia regarding dementia, its types, and preventive strategies remains limited. This knowledge gap often results in late-stage diagnoses, complicating treatment and care. To address this issue, PT Prodia Widyahusada Tbk (Prodia), a healthcare provider committed to preventive measures, has initiated a series of educational seminars on dementia. These seminars complement Prodia's "10,000 Free Dementia Screenings" program launched in July 2024.
The free screenings utilize the AD-8 (INA) method, facilitating early detection and the formulation of appropriate therapeutic plans. Early screening empowers individuals with dementia (ODD) to actively participate in decisions concerning their future and encourages caregivers to seek comprehensive information on dementia care.
These educational seminars are designed for individuals who have completed the initial dementia screening form, potential caregivers, and Prodia clients aged 50-70. The sessions aim to provide in-depth information on dementia, covering early detection, prevention, management, and post-diagnosis follow-up examinations. Interactive activities, such as Brain Exercise and Music Therapy conducted by Alzheimer Indonesia (ALZI), enhance participant engagement.
The seminars feature expert speakers, including Arya Govinda, who discusses "The Science Behind Dementia: Understanding the Brain," Vallensia N. Febriyanti, who presents "Thriving with Dementia: Exploring Care Options and Daily Practices," and a Q&A session with Risanggita Kinanthi, Prodia's Product Specialist.
Dewi Muliaty, Prodia's CEO, emphasizes the importance of comprehensive caregiver education. She states, "Effective caregiving requires a deep understanding of ODD's physical and emotional needs. With proper education, families can confidently navigate challenging situations and create a safe environment for ODD."
Additionally, Prodia offers specialized services for the elderly through the Prodia Senior Health Centre, providing precision services that include laboratory tests, non-laboratory assessments, and therapy. The "Health Plan for Dementia" program is designed to assist in the comprehensive management of ODD health, encompassing advanced screenings, consultations with general practitioners and geriatricians, nutritional counseling, laboratory examinations, and educational sessions. This program aims to control risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol to slow dementia progression. It also benefits ODD families by offering support groups for discussion and support in maintaining ODD quality of life.
In conclusion, proactive education and early screening are vital in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with dementia. By increasing public awareness and providing comprehensive support services, healthcare providers like Prodia play a crucial role in addressing dementia-related challenges in Indonesia.
