Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality in Indonesia, with over 408,661 new cancer cases reported in 2022, according to the Global Cancer Observatory. To address this alarming issue, Ciputra Hospital Surabaya has introduced the Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) system—a groundbreaking technology that enables early detection of breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breast tissue.
The Importance of Early Detection
Early detection of breast cancer is critical for improving treatment outcomes and reducing mortality rates. However, according to Dr. Desak Gede Agung Suprabawati, a surgical oncologist, many Indonesians delay medical consultations until the disease has reached advanced stages. She noted, “In Indonesia, around 70-80% of patients only seek medical help when they are already in the late stages of their illness.”
This highlights the urgent need for awareness campaigns and accessible screening options to encourage individuals to undergo regular health check-ups.
How ABUS Revolutionizes Breast Cancer Screening
ABUS, or Automated Breast Ultrasound, is an advanced 3D imaging technology designed to detect breast abnormalities that traditional mammograms may miss, especially in women with dense breast tissue. Dense breast tissue, which is common among Asian women, can make traditional mammograms less effective due to the overlapping of tissue and lesions.
Dr. Sidharta, a radiologist at Ciputra Hospital, explained that the Invenia ABUS 2.0 system used at the facility offers a radiation-free and comfortable screening alternative. “This technology is particularly suitable for Indonesian women, as 76-80% of them have dense breast tissue. The results are available within 1-2 hours,” he said.
The hospital is also offering an affordable promotional package for ABUS screenings, priced at Rp 1.5 million, which includes consultations with specialists and radiologists.
Empowering Communities Through Awareness and Accessibility
Organizations like Lovepink Indonesia, which focus on breast cancer awareness, applaud the introduction of ABUS technology in healthcare facilities. Asih Suprapti from Lovepink's Surabaya branch emphasized that early detection can save lives, noting that even young individuals, such as a 17-year-old member of their organization, have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
ABUS not only aids in early diagnosis but also ensures that treatment can begin at the earliest possible stage, significantly increasing the chances of recovery.
A Step Toward Reducing Mortality
The introduction of ABUS technology at Ciputra Hospital Surabaya is a milestone in Indonesia’s fight against breast cancer. By providing accurate and early detection, ABUS is expected to decrease breast cancer-related fatalities and improve patient outcomes.
As breast cancer remains a major health concern in Indonesia, initiatives like these reflect the commitment of healthcare providers to prioritize innovation and accessibility for all.
