During the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, President Prabowo Subianto announced Indonesia’s commitment to providing US$30 million to support the World Health Organization (WHO). This substantial funding is aimed at bridging financial gaps in WHO activities and strengthening global health systems.
"We are willing to commit US$30 million to bridge funding gaps for WHO activities. We hope this can positively contribute to the noble work done by the United Nations," said President Prabowo in his address to global leaders on November 19, 2024.
Global Collaboration to Address Urgent Challenges
President Prabowo’s announcement underscored Indonesia’s dedication to addressing pressing global issues. He urged G20 nations to leverage their collective power to tackle challenges such as health inequities, climate change, hunger, and poverty. Prabowo emphasized the importance of transparency, inclusivity, and consensus as guiding principles for G20 collaboration.
"The G20's convening power must unite and bring together advanced and emerging economies, converging different views in response to the world's most urgent challenges," Prabowo stated, highlighting the group’s unique role in fostering global unity.
Strengthening WHO’s Role Amid Global Uncertainty
On the sidelines of the summit, President Prabowo held discussions with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The conversation focused on the dynamic global situation and the challenges faced by WHO in delivering equitable health services worldwide.
Indonesia’s Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati also shared insights into the meeting. In a social media post, she stated, "President @prabowo conveyed Indonesia's commitment to supporting WHO activities in strengthening a fair and quality global health system."
The pledged funds aim to enhance WHO’s capacity to address critical health challenges, from pandemic preparedness to improving healthcare access in underserved regions.
Indonesia’s Leadership in Global Health Initiatives
This commitment reinforces Indonesia’s growing leadership role in global health governance. By providing substantial financial support, Indonesia aims to contribute to WHO’s mission of ensuring health equity and quality care for all. This pledge is particularly significant as it comes at a time when global health systems are facing mounting pressures from economic uncertainty and climate-induced health crises.
Indonesia’s proactive stance aligns with its broader objectives to achieve universal health coverage and strengthen partnerships within the global health community. Prabowo’s call for unity among G20 nations further highlights the importance of collaborative efforts to address complex global issues effectively.
Looking Ahead
The pledged $30 million is expected to bolster WHO’s efforts to respond to emerging health challenges and promote sustainable healthcare solutions. As Indonesia steps up its contributions, it sets an example for other nations to prioritize global health as a cornerstone of international cooperation.
Prabowo’s announcement at the G20 Summit sends a clear message: Indonesia is committed to advancing global health equity and fostering a more inclusive and resilient world. This initiative not only strengthens WHO’s capabilities but also reaffirms Indonesia’s position as a key player in global health diplomacy.
