Apple has officially entered the production phase for the iPhone 17 Air, marking a significant step forward for the tech giant. According to DigiTimes (via MacRumors), Foxconn, Apple's manufacturing partner, has started the "product introduction phase" for this model. This phase includes initial production runs, design validation, and prototype testing, with mass production expected to begin soon. The iPhone 17 Air is projected to debut in September 2025.
Rumors suggest that the iPhone 17 Air could be the slimmest iPhone ever, measuring just 6mm thick—significantly thinner than the iPhone 16 Plus, which is 7.8mm. The focus on extreme thinness comes with its own set of challenges, including the need to fit the device’s circuitry while preventing overheating. However, Apple’s experience with manufacturing thin devices like the iPad may help address these concerns.
While the design of the iPhone 17 Air remains under wraps, reports indicate it may feature a single rear camera positioned at the top center of the device. Additionally, the phone may be too slim to accommodate a traditional SIM card slot, meaning it could rely entirely on eSIM technology, which would streamline the design even further.
The iPhone 17 Air is also being linked to Apple's long-rumored folding iPhone project. According to sources, producing a super-thin iPhone could lay the groundwork for future foldable devices, potentially offering insights into how to combine slim design with flexible technology.
In addition to the iPhone 17 Air, Apple is expected to release three other iPhone 17 models by the fall of 2025. However, before the iPhone 17 series, Apple will likely launch the iPhone SE 4, which is expected to fill the gap until the iPhone 17 Air arrives.
Apple's commitment to innovation and design is evident in the iPhone 17 Air, which could set a new standard for smartphone slimness while pushing the boundaries of mobile technology.
