Ministry of Industry Drives AI Adoption to Boost Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Efficiency

The Ministry of Industry is accelerating digital transformation in Indonesia’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector through the facilitation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based Industry 4.0 solution Proof of Concept (PoC) to improve industrial efficiency and competitiveness (20/07).

The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of the national manufacturing sector amid global economic developments. The pharmaceutical sector is included as one of the priority sectors in the Making Indonesia 4.0 roadmap.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said digital transformation has become an urgent need for national industries to improve efficiency, productivity, and global competitiveness.

"Accelerating digital transformation and adopting advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer an option, but a necessity to boost efficiency and global competitiveness in our chemical and pharmaceutical sectors," Agus said in Jakarta on Monday (20/7).

Ministry of Industry Facilitates AI-Based Industry 4.0 Solutions for Pharma Sector

To follow up on the policy direction, the Industrial Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDMI) through the Indonesia 4.0 Digital Industry Center (PIDI 4.0) continues to strengthen digital technology implementation in the manufacturing sector.

The program is carried out through collaborative initiatives involving industrial users and technology providers.

BPSDMI Head Doddy Rahadi said the agency is committed to improving industrial human resource capabilities while accelerating real technology implementation in manufacturing companies.

"PIDI 4.0 facilitates the implementation of Proof of Concept (PoC) as a means for companies to test the feasibility of digital solutions under actual operational conditions before being implemented on a wider scale," Doddy said.

SIAT Technology Supports AI-Based Predictive Maintenance at Kalbe Farma

From April to June 2026, BPSDMI facilitated the implementation of the Proof of Concept (PoC) for System Invariant Analytics Technology (SIAT), developed by PT NEC Indonesia with local partner Bogor Technology.

The solution was implemented at PT Kalbe Farma Tbk with a focus on AI-based predictive maintenance systems and real-time monitoring of production equipment conditions.

SIAT uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze production machine conditions through predictive technology.

The system allows potential equipment problems to be detected earlier, helping companies reduce downtime risks, improve asset reliability, optimize maintenance activities, and support data-based decision-making.

The PoC also assessed system accuracy, integration with existing company systems, and opportunities to further develop the solution before wider implementation.

Government and Industry Collaboration Drives Digital Implementation

The PoC facilitation program was concluded through the closing event of the Industry 4.0 Solution PoC Facilitation held at PIDI 4.0.

The event was attended by the Directorate of Downstream Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries, which serves as the supervisory unit for the pharmaceutical industry sector within the Ministry of Industry.

Ronggolawe Sahuri, Head of the Industrial Human Resources Education and Training Center, said collaboration between the government, industrial users, and technology providers is an effective model to accelerate Industry 4.0 implementation in Indonesia.

"Through this collaboration, the digital transformation process is not only a concept, but can be realized through implementation that provides real benefits for industries," Ronggolawe said.

Evaluation results showed that the PoC was successfully completed and received a satisfaction score of 8 out of 10 from PT Kalbe Farma Tbk.

Of the three main targets set at the beginning of the implementation, two targets were fully achieved. The results showed that SIAT has strong potential to continue to a broader implementation stage in the manufacturing industry.

AI Adoption Strengthens Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Competitiveness

PT NEC Indonesia President Director Akifumi Katano said the success of the PoC represents an important milestone in accelerating digital innovation adoption in Indonesia’s industrial sector.

"The success of this PoC shows an important milestone in efforts to accelerate digital innovation in the industrial sector in Indonesia," Akifumi said.

Meanwhile, PT Kalbe Farma Tbk Engineering Group Head Ronald Effendi said SIAT implementation provides new opportunities to optimize the company’s digital assets and improve the competitiveness of the national pharmaceutical industry.

"This SIAT system is very comprehensive in integrating and processing data. This opens new potential for us and increases the company’s competitiveness in facing challenges in the pharmaceutical industry," Ronald said.
