Indonesian Halal Industry Sees Rising Consumption and Certification Push During Ramadan and Eid

Consumer demand for halal products in Indonesia rises significantly during Ramadan and Eid (11/03), covering sectors such as food and beverages, Muslim fashion, cosmetics, and halal pharmaceuticals. This surge presents a strategic opportunity to strengthen the national halal industry.

Menteri Perindustrian Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that the halal industry is not only a religious necessity but also a high-value economic sector contributing to Indonesia’s manufacturing and overall economy.

Halal Certification Strengthens Product Quality and Safety

Agus explained that consumer awareness now extends beyond religious compliance to include product quality and safety. Halal products are recognized for their transparent, hygienic production processes and better consumer protection.

Government Supports SMEs to Obtain Halal Certification

The Ministry of Industry encourages domestic producers, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to actively obtain halal certification. Such certification increases the competitiveness of national products in domestic and international markets.

Agus highlighted that halal certification not only builds consumer trust but also opens wider market access, particularly in Muslim-majority countries. Government programs provide mentoring, training, and certification facilitation for SMEs to meet halal standards.

Indonesian Halal Products Tap Global Market Potential

Indonesia’s halal product exports continue to grow, with 2024 projections exceeding USD50 billion in food and beverages, Muslim fashion, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Despite the global halal market exceeding USD3 trillion annually, trade among Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries remains low, creating opportunities for Indonesian exports.

With strong manufacturing capabilities and abundant human and natural resources, Indonesia has the potential to expand its share in the global halal supply chain. Agus expressed confidence that government policies, improved industry quality, and collaboration among stakeholders will help Indonesia become a recognized global player.

Halal Products Become Part of Modern Lifestyle

Agus also noted that halal products have evolved into a modern lifestyle choice, appealing not only to Muslim consumers but also to global audiences increasingly concerned with product quality, safety, and health.
