Indonesia and United Kingdom Launch New Strategic Partnership to Expand Economic, Security, and Cultural Ties

Indonesia and the United Kingdom officially launched a new strategic partnership during President Prabowo Subianto’s official visit to London (20/01).

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto accompanied the President in a bilateral meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, marking a key moment to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Four Priority Areas of the Strategic Accord

The Accord for a New Strategic Partnership between the United Kingdom and Indonesia sets a long-term framework grounded in democracy, mutual respect, and sovereignty.

It focuses on four priority areas: inclusive economic growth, climate cooperation, energy transition, and environmental protection; defense and security collaboration; and stronger people-to-people ties through education, innovation, and cultural exchange.

Economic Growth Partnership Signed

As part of the visit, Minister Airlangga signed the Indonesia-United Kingdom Economic Growth Partnership (EGP) on 19 January 2026 with UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Peter Kyle.

The EGP is a key pillar of the Accord, designed as a practical framework to increase trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Indonesia and the UK.

It reflects both countries’ commitment to growth-oriented economic collaboration and value creation.

Business and Education Forums Strengthen Collaboration

President Prabowo and Minister Airlangga also participated in the United Kingdom–Indonesia Business and Investment Forum, hosted by the UK Deputy Prime Minister, which connected Indonesian and UK business leaders for strategic dialogue on trade and investment.

Additionally, they attended the King’s College Education Roundtable, aimed at strengthening higher education collaboration and human resource development between the two countries.

Trade Performance Shows Strong Potential

Indonesia-UK trade demonstrates solid fundamentals. Between January and November 2025, total trade reached USD 2.41 billion, with Indonesia recording a surplus of USD 459.50 million, highlighting potential for deeper cooperation in trade and investment.

Key officials accompanying President Prabowo included Foreign Minister Sugiono, Investment and Downstream Industry Minister Rosan Roeslani, Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto, Maritime Affairs Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Djiwandono, and other senior officials.
