Indonesia’s Push to Wire 2,500 Villages by 2026 to Bridge Digital Divide

The Indonesian government plans to provide internet access to all 2,500 villages that currently lack connectivity by 2026, as part of accelerating the Indonesia Digital development program (10/12).

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid said that equitable connectivity is essential for rural residents to access education, public services, and economic opportunities.

“We are aware that disparities in access remain across regions, so development in these areas will be a priority in 2026,” Minister Meutya said during the Indonesia Digital Direction Declaration event at Samisara Grand Ballroom, Sopo Del Tower, Jakarta Selatan (10/12).

She noted that this initiative follows massive infrastructure development carried out by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs in 2023-2024.

Infrastructure Utilization Must Deliver Greater Economic Impact

Minister Meutya emphasized that existing infrastructure should create larger economic benefits.

“The utilization has not yet been maximized according to the capacity that could be achieved from infrastructure development. Technology is advancing, but its economic impact, although already felt, can still be significantly increased,” she stated.

Digital Transformation to Benefit Communities and Businesses

Minister Meutya added that digital spaces must provide opportunities for communities, businesses, and the government to grow together.

“Digital transformation must create real added value for the economy and open opportunities for everyone,” she said.

Indonesia Digital Development Strategy: Connected, Growing, and Secure

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs outlined the Indonesia Digital strategy under the theme: Connected, Growing, and Secure.

This theme emphasizes the goal of strengthening digital economic growth while ensuring safe and inclusive digital spaces.

The event was attended by Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Rini Widyantini, Head of the National Cyber and Crypto Agency Nugroho Sulistyo Budi, Deputy Ministers, and representatives from ministries, local governments, telecom industries, academia, and digital communities.
