Frugal Living: A Financial Revolution Among Indonesia’s Youth

As the cost of living rises, Millennials and Gen Z in Indonesia are redefining what it means to live well. Frugal living is no longer just about saving, it’s about making intentional, value-driven choices.

Gen Z Leads the Way

Gen Z is at the forefront of this movement, with 56% actively adopting cost-saving strategies such as leveraging online promotions, using discount apps, and reducing social outings. Their tech-savviness plays a key role, enabling them to make informed decisions and optimize spending without compromising on experiences.

Beyond saving money, this generation’s approach to frugality is tied to their broader commitment to sustainability. By prioritizing minimalism and conscious consumption, Gen Z is redefining what it means to live well in a fast-paced world.

Millennials: Balancing Tradition and Innovation

For Millennials, frugal living is about blending traditional values with modern strategies. Practical habits such as cooking at home (66%) and shopping at traditional markets are common among this cohort, reflecting their focus on health, family, and affordability.

Unlike Gen Z, Millennials often balance financial goals with responsibilities like family and career. Their approach to frugality emphasizes not only saving but also creating a stable foundation for their loved ones.

Beyond Budgeting

Frugal living among Indonesia’s youth goes beyond simple budgeting—it is reshaping consumer culture. The focus is no longer on materialism but on substance and authenticity.

As Samuel Ray, a popular content creator and frugality advocate, explains, “It’s about finding fulfillment in simplicity and staying true to what matters most, rather than chasing appearances.” This mindset resonates with both generations, empowering them to prioritize personal values over societal expectations.

A Shared Vision

Despite their differences, Millennials and Gen Z share a vision of financial independence rooted in thoughtful living. By embracing frugality as a conscious choice rather than a constraint, they are setting new standards for sustainability and financial well-being.

This movement proves that living frugally does not equate to deprivation but rather to making meaningful choices that align with one’s goals and values. Together, these generations are redefining success in a way that prioritizes authenticity, simplicity, and long-term sustainability.
