Satelit Nusantara 5: Indonesia’s Largest Satellite Yet, Aiming to Bridge Digital Gaps

Indonesia has entered a new phase following the successful launch of Satelit Nusantara 5 (N5) on September 10, 2025. The satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral, USA, using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

Strategic Importance of Satelit Nusantara 5 for National Development

Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, stressed that the satellite is designed for the people’s benefit. “Satelit Nusantara Lima is a bridge connecting Indonesia without limits. Fast internet is not just about technology, but about equal opportunity. Children in Maluku and Papua will have the same access to education as those in Jakarta. Patients on small islands can consult top doctors, and SMEs can compete in the digital world. This is the true meaning of digital equity,” she said.

Meutya added that the launch aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive emphasizing technological independence and sovereignty. Digital transformation is a strategic program to ensure all Indonesians benefit equally from development.

Technical Specifications and Regional Coverage of N5 Satellite

With a capacity of 160 Gbps, N5 is the largest communication satellite in Southeast Asia. It will occupy a strategic orbital slot at 113° East longitude, known as the golden spot, covering all of Indonesia and improving connectivity in the eastern region.

The satellite will expand opportunities for remote education, digital healthcare services, online SMEs, and access to entertainment and information in remote areas.

Collaborative Efforts and Government Role in Satellite Management

N5 is owned by PT. Satelit Nusantara Lima (SNL), a subsidiary of PT. Pasifik Satelit Nusantara (PSN). It was developed in cooperation with Boeing Satellite Systems, Hughes Network Systems, and SpaceX.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital ensures orbit registration and safeguards national sovereignty over the satellite’s management.

Historical Context: Indonesia’s Satellite Milestones

The N5 launch follows significant milestones like Palapa A1 in 1976, Nusantara Satu in 2019, and SATRIA-1 in 2023. Through N5, Indonesia affirms its role not just as a user but as a manager of satellite technology, providing direct benefits to its people and strengthening its position as a digital connectivity hub in the Asia-Pacific.
