Vale Indonesia Boosts Nickel Matte Output by 2% in H1 2025 Amid Rising Global Demand

PT Vale Indonesia produced 35,584 tons of nickel in matte during the first half of 2025, marking a 2% increase compared to the same period the previous year. The company has set a full-year production target of 71,234 tons, higher than the previous year’s goal.

“Nickel matte shipments in the second quarter also increased to 18,023 tons, reflecting stable operational performance,” said Abu Ashar, Chief Operation & Infrastructure at Vale Indonesia.

As of June 30, 2025, Vale’s subsidiary in non-ferrous metal manufacturing, BNSI, reported a net asset balance of US$119.67 million and a net profit of US$225 million.

Operational Base Strengthened for Second Half

Vale Indonesia’s operational foundation is projected to grow stronger in the second half of 2025, according to company management.

“We have prepared several initiatives, such as negotiations on nickel matte payable, increased major maintenance to support production stability and optimization. On the sales side, we will ensure the sale of 2.2 million tons of saprolite ore at strong premium prices,” said Rizky Putra, Director and CFO of Vale Indonesia.

Energy Consumption Rises, But Prices Fall

Energy consumption followed production growth trends. HSFO usage rose to 380,751 barrels, while its average price slightly declined to US$83.42 per barrel. Coal consumption increased to 127,291 tons, with prices falling 19% to US$131.55 per ton.

In contrast, diesel prices climbed 8% to US$0.85 per liter, although its usage volume declined. Weaker global energy prices, combined with bulk material procurement strategies, allowed Vale Indonesia to manage energy costs effectively.
