OpenAI Acquires Statsig for $1.1B: What It Means for AI Application Innovation

OpenAI announced the acquisition of Statsig, a software experimentation company, for $1.1 billion on September 2, 2025.

Statsig helps organizations test features and leverage real-time data in their operations, which complements OpenAI’s focus on AI-powered product development.

Vijaye Raji Joins OpenAI as Applications Technology Chief

As part of the acquisition, Statsig CEO Vijaye Raji will join OpenAI as technology chief in the applications unit, reporting to Fidji Simo, who was appointed to lead OpenAI’s applications business in May 2025.

“Working with the incredible team at OpenAI to build AI-powered experiences at scale for people and businesses is a rare and meaningful opportunity,” Raji said on LinkedIn.

“Doing that with the help of tools we built at Statsig makes it even more special.”

Fidji Simo praised Raji’s experience, saying, “Vijaye has a remarkable record of building new consumer and B2B products and systems at scale.”

Strategic Growth Through Recent Acquisitions

OpenAI has recently accelerated acquisitions, using its substantial funding and rising stock value to expand.

Its largest deal was in May 2025 when it acquired Jony Ive’s AI devices startup IO for nearly $6.5 billion in an all-equity deal.

Earlier, in 2024, OpenAI acquired analytics database company Rockset for an undisclosed amount.

Earlier in 2025, OpenAI had planned to buy the AI-assisted coding tool Windsurf for $3 billion, but the deal did not materialize. Instead, Google entered into a $2.4 billion licensing deal and hired Windsurf’s co-founder.

Statsig to Operate Independently Under OpenAI

OpenAI said Statsig will continue to operate independently and serve its customers from its Seattle office.

The acquisition is pending customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval.

Raji said in a statement, “The journey with Statsig has been deeply gratifying, leading me to this moment and giving me conviction that we will continue helping teams ship better software every day.”
