Semaai, a promising agricultural startup, has made waves in Indonesia by offering services that significantly boost the sales of farmers' supply stores, known locally as Toko Tani. According to a recent study conducted by Semaai in partnership with PRISMA, their digital services have been shown to increase store sales by up to 50%. This partnership is part of a larger initiative supported by the Indonesian and Australian governments to foster growth in the national agricultural market.
Since its collaboration with PRISMA began in 2022, Semaai has expanded its reach across Central Java and Yogyakarta, involving 5,000 Toko Tani and 200,000 small-scale farmers. The startup's unique approach combines digital solutions like the "Clinic" feature, which provides farmers and store owners with valuable agricultural advice and financial management tools. This combination has not only enhanced the efficiency of agricultural practices but also strengthened the businesses that supply products to farmers.
One of the key components of Semaai’s offering is the Klinik Semaai, a digital consultation service that guides farmers on pesticide usage, pest and disease management, and product recommendations. Between August 2022 and August 2024, 65% of users accessed this feature, showcasing its popularity and effectiveness. According to the study, 94% of the participating Toko Tani reported an increase in their agricultural knowledge, particularly in recommending the right products to farmers. As a result, 57% of store owners saw an increase in loyal customers, while 49% experienced a boost in overall sales.
For store owners like Zahrotun Nikmah, the owner of Toko Tani Berkibar, the service has been transformative. “When farmers successfully use products purchased from my store, other farmers are encouraged to buy, which led to a 50% increase in sales and double the profits,” Zahrotun said in a press statement. This testimonial underscores the direct impact that Semaai's services have on store revenues and the overall agricultural ecosystem.
In addition to the Klinik Semaai feature, the startup also offers financial services in collaboration with fintech companies and banks. These services aim to help Toko Tani manage cash flow, diversify their product offerings, and strengthen long-term competitiveness. Nearly 600 stores have used this financial tool, with 67% reporting inventory growth and 63% reporting an improvement in cash flow management.
The success of Semaai’s services not only highlights the importance of technology in agriculture but also demonstrates how partnerships between startups, financial institutions, and government programs can create lasting, positive changes for local businesses. As the agricultural landscape continues to evolve, Semaai’s model provides valuable insights into how digital transformation can support both farmers and retailers in boosting their sales and improving financial stability.
