GoTo Partners with Tencent and Alibaba to Boost Indonesia’s Digital Economy

In a major development aimed at boosting Indonesia's digital economy, GoTo Group, Tencent Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud have entered into a landmark agreement to strengthen cloud infrastructure and foster local digital talent. Announced at the Indonesia-China Business Forum in Beijing on November 10, 2024, the partnership aligns with Indonesia’s long-term vision for Indonesia Emas 2045, a goal to become a leading digital economy by mid-century.

The partnership, witnessed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, marks a significant move for Indonesia’s tech landscape. The collaboration focuses on three key areas: strengthening cloud infrastructure, enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, and developing a robust local talent pool equipped for the digital age.

Tencent Cloud, one of the key players in the agreement, has committed to building its third Internet Data Center (IDC) in Indonesia. The company is investing around $500 million in cloud infrastructure and AI resources by 2030. This strategic investment aims to empower local businesses with advanced cloud and AI solutions, accelerating Indonesia's digital transformation and economic growth.

Similarly, Alibaba Cloud, the first major cloud service provider to establish local infrastructure in Indonesia, has already set up three data centers across the country. With plans to double the number of trained professionals in the coming years, Alibaba Cloud intends to train 800,000 individuals by 2033, up from the initial 400,000 already trained. The company is also opening a Skills Center at the University of Indonesia as part of its Alibaba Cloud Academic Empowerment Program (AAEP).

This collaboration extends the previously announced cloud service agreement between GoTo, Tencent, and Alibaba. Under this agreement, GoTo's vast data ecosystem will remain within Indonesia’s borders, ensuring the security and sovereignty of user data while enhancing digital security for Indonesian businesses and consumers. This partnership also strengthens GoTo’s core infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) across Indonesia.

Patrick Walujo, CEO of GoTo Group, emphasized the importance of this partnership for Indonesia's digital future. “We are proud to have President Prabowo Subianto witness this partnership, which marks a critical milestone for GoTo in strengthening Indonesia’s digital infrastructure. This collaboration with Tencent Cloud and Alibaba Cloud ensures GoTo’s platforms are secure, scalable, and ready to support Indonesia’s digital economy. By providing advanced cloud services and training, we aim to accelerate growth, innovation, and sustainable economic development,” he said.

Poshu Yeung, Senior Vice President of Tencent Cloud International, praised Indonesia’s dynamic economy and expressed Tencent’s commitment to empowering Indonesian businesses. “Indonesia has tremendous potential, and we are excited to contribute to the country’s digital transformation by providing cutting-edge technologies that will drive innovation and expand connectivity across the nation,” said Yeung.

Sean Yuan, Vice President of Alibaba Cloud International, reinforced the long-term commitment of Alibaba Cloud to Indonesia. “We are honored to have President Prabowo’s presence today, underscoring our strong, long-term commitment to Indonesia’s digital economy. Our focus is to support Indonesia’s digital ecosystem with high-performance solutions that open new opportunities for businesses, foster economic growth, and help achieve a more inclusive digital future,” said Yuan.

With their expertise in data analytics, AI, and cybersecurity, both Tencent and Alibaba will play a critical role in enhancing GoTo’s infrastructure, creating a robust foundation for businesses and users across Indonesia. The collaboration also plays a crucial role in strengthening digital inclusion in Indonesia, ensuring that technology benefits a wide range of industries from finance and retail to entertainment and logistics.
