Indonesia’s SATRIA-1 Satellite to Improve Connectivity in 3T Areas: What Does It Mean for the Future?

The Indonesian government continues to prioritize the development of digital connectivity in 3T regions (underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost areas) as part of efforts to boost the utilization of digital infrastructure. This initiative aims to support the country’s broader digital transformation agenda.

Vice Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, emphasized that improving connectivity in 3T areas is crucial for advancing Indonesia’s digital transition. He mentioned that Central Maluku is one of the key areas under the Ministry of Communication and Informatics' (Kementerian Komdigi) focus.

"Therefore, if there are blank spots or areas without coverage, please consult with us. If it’s not a 3T area, it will be considered commercial. We will collaborate with operators to help build Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) to improve connectivity," said Patria during a meeting with Central Maluku Regent Zulkarnain Awat Amir at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics in Jakarta on Tuesday (6/5).

Satellite Technology and Connectivity Services for 3T Areas

To address connectivity challenges in remote regions, Nezar Patria highlighted the role of the Satelit Republik Indonesia (SATRIA)-1 satellite.

This satellite service will provide internet access to underserved 3T areas, with speeds of up to 3 to 4 Mbps.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics will focus on ensuring that key public services, including education, healthcare, government, and defense, are supported through satellite services.

"SATRIA-1 can provide speeds of 3 to 4 Mbps. We will study the area and see if it can be supported using SATRIA-1. Ground segments can be installed at strategic points to support education, healthcare, government, and defense," Patria explained.

Digital Literacy Initiatives to Maximize Digital Connectivity Impact

Patria also pointed out the importance of digital literacy in enhancing the effectiveness of digital connectivity in 3T regions.

By improving public awareness, the government aims to empower communities to utilize digital infrastructure for more impactful activities.

"Digital literacy is necessary there to make the public more aware. This is also to educate them on the dangers of hoaxes, misinformation, and disinformation," he emphasized.

In addition to improving connectivity, the Ministry is focused on enhancing the digital capacity of local government officials through initiatives like the Digital Talent Scholarship Program and Digital Leadership Academy.

Supporting Digital Government Development

In line with its commitment to digital transformation, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics is accelerating the development of an electronic-based government system (SPBE).

Patria stressed that this system is a critical part of the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen digital governance across Indonesia.

"Because we are also intensifying efforts to accelerate the electronic-based government system (SPBE)," he added.
