The Indonesian government is making strides in advancing cancer care with the introduction of Sumatra's first Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan at RS Adam Malik General Hospital in Medan. This groundbreaking development signifies a critical milestone in decentralizing healthcare services and improving access to advanced cancer diagnostics for residents outside the capital.

Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono highlighted the importance of PET Scan technology during the groundbreaking ceremony for the hospital's Integrated Oncology Center. “Until now, PET Scans were limited to three facilities in Jakarta. The addition of this advanced diagnostic tool in Medan is a game-changer for cancer treatment in Sumatra,” he said.

Enhanced Cancer Detection and Care

PET Scans are highly sophisticated tools that detect cancerous cells and assess their spread at an early stage. By incorporating this technology, RS Adam Malik is set to enhance cancer care outcomes and reduce mortality rates. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment, particularly for prevalent cancers such as breast, cervical, colorectal, and lung cancers, which are among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Indonesia.

The PET Scan forms part of the hospital’s broader plan to establish a world-class Integrated Oncology Center. This eight-story facility will house 200 beds, three state-of-the-art operating rooms, and cutting-edge technologies like Linear Accelerators (Linac) and Brachytherapy. These advancements aim to provide comprehensive care, from early detection to treatment.

Addressing Disparities in Healthcare

The initiative addresses a significant healthcare gap in Indonesia, where advanced diagnostic tools like PET Scans have historically been limited to the capital. Patients in Sumatra and surrounding regions often face challenges in accessing timely and accurate diagnoses due to the lack of local facilities. This new center at RS Adam Malik not only bridges this gap but also sets a precedent for similar developments across the country.

In addition to benefiting patients, the center is expected to reduce the economic burden of cancer care. Early detection through PET Scans minimizes the need for extensive treatments, ultimately lowering healthcare costs.

Government Commitment to Cancer Care

The establishment of Sumatra's first PET Scan is part of Indonesia's broader strategy to enhance cancer care infrastructure nationwide. By 2027, the government plans to expand the availability of PET Scans to 21 units across 16 hospitals, ensuring equitable access to early cancer diagnostics in remote and underserved regions.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that the Integrated Oncology Center will not only serve as a treatment hub but also focus on early cancer detection and prevention. Free cancer screenings are set to begin next month, enabling early-stage diagnoses and improved survival rates.
