Healthcare AI Must Focus on Protecting Patients

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare with its ability to quickly analyze data and recommend diagnoses. Research shows that AI can accurately identify diseases based on symptoms, making it a valuable tool, especially when efficiency and expanded healthcare access are critical.

However, Setiaji, Chief of the Technology Transformation Office (TTO) at Indonesia’s Ministry of Health, emphasized the need to prioritize patient safety. “Doctors remain the ultimate decision-makers, considering human and ethical aspects. AI should serve as a diagnostic aid, not a replacement,” he stated.

AI’s integration into clinical practices aims to enhance decision-making speed and data-informed accuracy. Still, human expertise remains irreplaceable. Setiaji underscored the importance of critical assessments of AI research methodologies. "Research conducted in controlled environments may not fully represent the complexities of clinical practice, especially in Indonesia," he noted.

AI systems, while effective in specific scenarios, face limitations in addressing individual medical needs. Variability in symptoms and the nuances of patient interaction require a doctor’s comprehensive evaluation, including history, environment, and lifestyle factors.

Setiaji also cautioned against over-reliance on AI for personal health advice. “AI tools, such as ChatGPT, process existing data but cannot analyze the unique medical conditions of each individual,” he explained. "Physical exams, lab tests, and advanced diagnostics remain essential for accurate treatment."
