Ministry of Industry Strengthens Indonesia’s Agro Industry for Global Markets

The Ministry of Industry is strengthening the competitiveness of Indonesia’s agro industry by increasing production capacity and accelerating downstreaming to produce higher-value products, expand export market access, and strengthen its position in global supply chains (07/08).

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said Indonesia’s abundant natural resources are a strategic asset for developing the agro industry.

He said this potential needs to be optimized by improving the industry’s ability to produce quality products, meet international standards, and respond to changing global market needs.

“Indonesia has very large natural resources. The challenge is how these resources can be processed into industrial products with high added value and competitiveness in the global market. Therefore, strengthening the capacity of industry players is an important part of the national industrial development strategy,” the Minister said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday (7/8).

According to Agus, entering export markets depends not only on product quality. Companies also need to understand the characteristics of their target markets, meet regulatory requirements, and build their image and credibility among international buyers.

“The global market is increasingly competitive and has increasingly complex requirements. National industries must be able to identify market opportunities, meet quality and food safety standards, and demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. In this way, Indonesian products can not only enter global markets but also have a strong and sustainable position,” he said.

Export Management Training for Agro Industry

As part of the effort, the Directorate General of Agro Industry at the Ministry of Industry held Export Management Technical Guidance from July 21 to 24, 2026, in Jakarta.

The program was attended by 20 participants from 16 companies in the spice, seaweed, microalgae, and sago industries.

The four commodities are considered to have strong potential to be developed into higher-value industrial products with opportunities in international markets.

The Ministry of Industry is therefore strengthening industry players’ ability to manage export strategies in a more measurable way and based on market needs.

Acting Director General of Agro Industry at the Ministry of Industry Putu Juli Ardika said the training was a concrete step to provide industry players with practical skills to face international trade dynamics.

“Strengthening market access must be followed by industrial readiness. Business players need to be able to accurately identify market opportunities, understand the requirements of export destination countries, and effectively communicate their product advantages to potential global buyers,” Putu said.

Market Intelligence and Export Requirements

Putu said the training included the use of market intelligence to identify market opportunities and support data-based business decisions.

Participants also received an understanding of quality assurance and food safety requirements in accordance with the regulations of export destination countries.

The Ministry of Industry also introduced sustainability as part of the strategy to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian products.

Participants were trained to prepare a Sustainability Company Profile and Sustainability Pitch Deck to communicate their companies’ commitments to environmental and governance aspects to global markets.

“International market trends show that sustainability is increasingly becoming an important consideration for buyers. Therefore, our industries must be able to show not only quality products but also how companies operate their businesses responsibly and sustainably,” Putu said.

Building Export Readiness Through Practical Training

The training combined group discussions, export experience sharing sessions, case study analysis, and promotional material workshops so that the materials could be applied directly.

Through this approach, participants were able to gain conceptual knowledge while also producing export strategy documents that could be used for their companies’ business development.

Putu said strengthening export management competencies is part of the Ministry of Industry’s efforts to build an agro industry ecosystem that is increasingly oriented toward global markets.

“We hope this activity can increase companies’ readiness to expand international business networks, increase product added value, and build sustainable business relationships with partners in various countries,” he said.

The Ministry of Industry is optimistic that strengthening industrial capacity will create more opportunities for Indonesian agro industry products to enter international markets.

Products based on spices, seaweed, microalgae, and sago are expected to develop beyond commodity products into higher-value industrial products that can strengthen their position and competitiveness in global markets.

“Going forward, we are optimistic that more Indonesian agro industry products will become known and accepted in world markets. Therefore, downstreaming, quality improvement, human resource development, and the ability to understand and meet global market needs must continue simultaneously,” Putu concluded.
