Indonesia Targets Stronger AI Position Through Compute Clusters and Digital Talent Development

Indonesia must develop a national AI compute cluster to strengthen its competitiveness in the global artificial intelligence industry, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria said during the "Meeting and Collaboration to Unite Innovation and Accelerate the National AI Ecosystem" at the Ministry of Communication and Digital in Jakarta. Indonesia Prioritizes AI Infrastructure and Compute Clusters

Nezar said Indonesia needs to focus on two key strategies: strengthening AI infrastructure development and expanding the country's compute cluster while improving the capabilities of Indonesia's digital talent.

"At least there are two very important strategies. The first is strengthening our position in AI infrastructure development. The second is strengthening our position in compute clusters, including strengthening Indonesia's digital talent so they can compete with global challenges," he said.

He explained that compute clusters have become increasingly important because modern AI depends on large-scale computing capacity.

According to Nezar, this infrastructure will serve as the foundation for AI model development, research, innovation, and the creation of AI-based solutions developed in Indonesia.

Indonesia Seeks a Larger Role in the Global AI Industry

Nezar said strengthening computing capacity should be accompanied by the development of a national AI ecosystem so Indonesia can become more than a market for foreign technology.

"We should not only become users, but also become a significant player that helps shape the direction of AI technology adoption in Indonesia," he said.

He added that Indonesia aims to secure a strategic position in the global AI industry value chain rather than remaining only a technology user.

National AI Ecosystem Requires Broad Collaboration

Nezar said Indonesia's success in AI will not depend only on the amount of investment it receives but also on its ability to build an integrated AI ecosystem through collaboration among the government, industry, academia, state-owned enterprises, communities, and national innovators.

He said AI development has become one of the priorities under Indonesia Digital Vision 2045.

According to Nezar, the initiative focuses on three main objectives: developing inclusive technology, empowering the national ecosystem, and strengthening Indonesia's digital sovereignty.

"We do not want to be only a market or a user. We want to secure a strategic position in the global AI industry value chain," he said.

Indonesia Highlights National Strengths for AI Development

Nezar said Indonesia has strong assets to support its AI ambitions, including critical minerals needed by the AI industry, energy resources to support digital infrastructure, and a demographic bonus that can provide future digital talent.

He also said AI development is no longer only a technology issue but has become part of global geopolitical competition.

"The most important thing is how we realize this through strong cooperation and synergistic collaboration so that Indonesia can build an AI ecosystem that is inclusive, empowered, and sovereign," he concluded.
