Indonesia Pushes Affordable 100 Mbps Internet to Expand Equal Digital Access Nationwide

Indonesia’s plan to provide 100 Mbps internet service at Rp100,000 per month is expected to become a turning point for equal digital access and internet affordability nationwide, according to Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria during the Grand Launching Ceremony of Internet Rakyat in West Jakarta (26/05).

Nezar said Indonesia still faces major challenges in improving internet service quality, even though telecommunications networks already cover most populated areas in the country.

Government Highlights Internet Quality Challenges

“Our telecommunications network already covers 97 percent of inhabited areas in the archipelago. In terms of landscape, it is already good, but the quality of our internet still needs to be improved,” Nezar said.

According to him, the main challenge is no longer only related to network expansion, but also improving service quality and ensuring affordable internet prices for the public.

The government considers fast and stable internet access increasingly important as digital transformation continues in sectors including education, public services, healthcare, and the digital economy.

Rp100,000 Internet Service Seen as Game Changer

Nezar stated that affordable high-speed internet services could help expand public access to productive digital spaces.

He said initiatives such as Internet Rakyat are important to reduce the digital gap that still exists in several regions.

“If we can provide 100 Mbps internet at Rp100,000, this will become a game changer. This is not only about internet connectivity, but about how people can gain more equal digital access,” he said.

Digital Inclusion Becomes National Priority

Nezar explained that Indonesia’s digital transformation requires inclusive infrastructure so the benefits of the digital economy can be enjoyed more evenly.

The government also wants to ensure that communities are not only technology users, but can use digital platforms to improve productivity and welfare.

“We want digital access to become more inclusive. There should not be communities left behind simply because they cannot afford quality internet access,” Nezar said.

He also emphasized the importance of cooperation between the government, industry players, telecommunications service providers, and other stakeholders to accelerate equal connectivity across Indonesia.

Future Technology Needs Stronger Internet Infrastructure

According to Nezar, Indonesia’s geographical conditions require innovative approaches so internet services can reach communities more widely and efficiently.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is also continuing efforts to improve the quality of the national network to support future technologies, including artificial intelligence, cloud services, the Internet of Things, and the national digital economy.

“In the future, our bandwidth needs will become much larger. Therefore, internet quality and affordability must progress together,” he said.

Collaboration Needed to Expand Connectivity

Through collaboration between the government and industry, Nezar hopes affordable high-speed internet services can create broader opportunities for communities.

He said improved internet access could help people access digital education, expand business opportunities, and strengthen Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
