Indonesian Smallholder Farmer Receives RSPO Certification in Thailand
The agricultural community of Jambi, Indonesia, achieved a significant milestone as Novie Zulhi, a smallholder farmer, received the prestigious Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification. Representing Perkumpulan Kotani Mandiri Bersama (PKMB), Novie’s accomplishment highlights the success of the “Smallholder Inclusion for Better Livelihood & Empowerment” (SMILE) program. The certification was presented by RSPO Chief Executive Officer Joseph D’Cruz on November 11, 2024, at the RSPO Annual Conference (RT2024) in Bangkok, Thailand.
PKMB, a farmer collective based in Merlung Village, Jambi, has seen remarkable growth since receiving its first RSPO certification in 2023. Starting with 211 members managing 330 hectares, the group has expanded to 471 members covering over 750 hectares. By December 2024, all members are expected to achieve RSPO certification, further solidifying their commitment to sustainable palm oil practices.
RSPO certification not only brings international recognition but also provides financial incentives. Through the support of Kao Corporation, smallholders like PKMB members gain access to premium benefits. These funds help farmers cover essential expenses such as fertilizers and pesticides, significantly improving their agricultural operations.
“This certification is a proud moment for me and PKMB,” Novie stated. “It brings global recognition to our sustainability efforts and adds value to our products. This motivates us to continue investing in responsible farming, ensuring a brighter future for our members and their families.”
SMILE Program: Transforming Smallholder Livelihoods
Launched in 2020, the SMILE program is a joint initiative by Asian Agri, Apical, and Kao. It aims to improve the economic stability and productivity of independent smallholders by addressing challenges impacting their livelihoods. The program focuses on promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and sustainable, climate-resilient farming techniques.
As of 2024, the program has enrolled 3,489 smallholders, with 1,373 already achieving RSPO certification. The program’s ambitious goal is to empower 5,000 independent smallholders by 2030.
Ivan Novrizaldie, Head of Sustainability at Asian Agri, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving these milestones. “Novie’s success reflects the collective effort and dedication of farmers and stakeholders. We are committed to building a sustainable and equitable palm oil industry that benefits everyone.”
Chandramohan Nair, Head of Sustainability at Apical, echoed this sentiment. “SMILE addresses socio-economic challenges by providing training and mentorship. By meeting RSPO’s rigorous certification standards, smallholders gain access to global markets and additional financial benefits.”
Future Expansion of the SMILE Program
Kao Corporation has also pledged continued support. Terasawa Kenji, Vice President of Procurement Strategic Sourcing, expressed optimism for the program’s growth. “We aim to empower more smallholders to participate in the global supply chain, strengthening their livelihoods for the long term.”
As PKMB members move toward full RSPO certification, this achievement demonstrates the power of collaborative initiatives in fostering sustainable agriculture. With the support of programs like SMILE, independent farmers are poised to play a more significant role in the global palm oil industry.
