How BRIN and CNRS Plan to Use AI for Advanced Ocean Prediction and Maritime Instrument Tech

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) have met to implement strategic maritime research cooperation (02/04).

Head of the Deep Sea Research Center at BRIN, A’an Johan Wahyudi, highlighted Indonesia's role as a natural laboratory for the Indo-Pacific and its strategic position in global climate regulation.

Transitioning from General Agreements to Concrete Scientific Action

Dominique Baillargeat, Director of the CNRS ASEAN office, noted that while a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in 2024, the partnership must now define specific topics.

The collaboration may include various frameworks, such as international research networks or the establishment of a long-term International Research Lab (IRL).

Focused Research on Ocean Dynamics and Artificial Intelligence

The Head of the Oceanography Research Center, Furqon Azis Ismail, confirmed that six research groups are ready to study critical issues like marine plastic pollution and water mass dynamics.

Discussions also included the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for ocean prediction and the development of independent deep-sea observation instruments.

World-Class Research Infrastructure and Future Roadmap

The French delegation visited the Integrated Oceanography Laboratory (LATERIO), an eight-story facility in Ancol equipped with 17 specialized laboratories.

CNRS has proposed a multi-day workshop to be held in Indonesia before the end of 2026 to narrow the cooperation down to four priority topics.
