Sunarso, President Director of PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), has been named "The Best CEO" for his leadership in sustainable financing during the 2024 TOP CEO Indonesia Awards. The accolade, presented on November 15, acknowledges Sunarso’s dedication to implementing green transformation strategies that align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.
Under Sunarso’s guidance, BRI has achieved significant growth, balancing financial performance with sustainability. As of Q3 2024, BRI recorded a sustainable financing portfolio of IDR 764.8 trillion—the largest among Indonesian banks. This portfolio includes IDR 677.1 trillion for social sector financing, IDR 83.3 trillion for eco-friendly business loans, and IDR 4.39 trillion in sustainability bonds.
In addition to its financing achievements, BRI has made strides in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It began calculating emissions in 2020 and now includes Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, encompassing financed emissions. With a 2022 baseline, BRI targets Net Zero Emission by 2050, aligning with Science-Based Targets initiatives.
The bank’s efforts extend to green initiatives such as renewable energy investments, green transportation, and sustainable products. Sunarso emphasized that these accomplishments reflect the collective dedication of BRI employees, known as "Insan BRILiaN."
This recognition positions BRI as a leader in integrating ESG principles into banking operations, demonstrating that sustainability is core to business strategy.
