Exxon Mobil Advances Deal to Power AI Data Centers With Natural Gas and Carbon Capture

Exxon Mobil is in advanced talks with power providers and technology companies to supply data centers with natural gas plants that use carbon capture technology, CEO Darren Woods said Friday.

“We’re hopeful that many of these hyperscalers are sincere when they talk about the desire to have low-emission facilities, because certainly in the near to medium term we’re probably the only realistic game in town to accomplish that,” Woods said on Exxon’s earnings call.

The company aims to capture 90% of carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas plants that power AI data centers.

Engagement with Hyperscalers and Power Companies

Exxon is discussing decarbonization strategies with hyperscalers, including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. “We’re pretty advanced in the conversations,” Woods noted, emphasizing the company’s focus on integrating carbon capture into the energy supply for AI infrastructure.

Tech Sector Energy Choices for Data Centers

Many technology companies have relied on renewable energy to offset data center emissions, while some are now investing in nuclear power. Certain firms are also using natural gas to ensure reliable energy. Meta, for example, signed an agreement with utility Entergy in Louisiana to power a data center campus using natural gas.

Exxon’s Carbon Capture Readiness

Woods underlined Exxon’s experience and infrastructure for carbon capture. “We secured locations. We’ve got the existing infrastructure, certainly have the know-how in terms of the technology of capturing, transporting,, and storing [carbon dioxide],” he said.
