How Huawei and Surge Are Revolutionizing Rural Education with Dual-Location Smart Classrooms

PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk (Surge) and Huawei Indonesia, in collaboration with the West Kalimantan Provincial Education Office, have unveiled the nation’s first Dual-Location Smart Classroom system. The launch took place at SMA Negeri 1 Pontianak and SMA Negeri 1 Mempawah, aiming to connect urban teaching expertise with students in more remote areas.

Each classroom is equipped with Huawei’s advanced distance learning tools—smart displays, whiteboards, HD cameras, and wireless microphones—enabling seamless, real-time lessons between multiple schools.

Real-Time Teaching Across Cities Using Smart Infrastructure

During the official demonstration, an English teacher in Pontianak taught classes in both Pontianak and Mempawah at the same time. The successful trial confirmed the system’s ability to provide an interactive, reliable, and immersive learning experience.

“Together with Huawei and the support of the West Kalimantan education authorities, we are turning connectivity into opportunity, giving children in remote areas of Indonesia the chance to learn directly from expert teachers,” said Yune Marketatmo, CEO of Surge.

Affordable Internet Access Supports Sustainable Learning

To maintain program sustainability, Surge is offering free 1 Gbps internet to participating schools, powered by its national fiber backbone and edge cloud infrastructure. This initiative forms part of its Internet Rakyat program, aimed at providing high-speed internet access to all communities.

Huawei’s role in delivering a cloud-based learning platform ensures students can not only attend live sessions but also review content on demand, making education more flexible and inclusive.

Government and Private Sector Unite for Merdeka Belajar Vision

“This Dual-Location Smart Classroom is built using cutting-edge technology to deliver a seamless, cloud-based learning experience. This way, we ensure students can interact with teachers in real time and review lessons anytime, anywhere,” said James Zeng, CEO of Huawei Indonesia Enterprise Business Group.

The initiative also aligns with Indonesia's national Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn) program, showcasing how public-private collaboration can drive education reform.

“I believe that one way to improve the quality of human resources is through adequate and affordable education and internet connectivity,” said Ria Norsan, Governor of West Kalimantan. “Through this initiative, internet facilities in schools can accelerate digital literacy and improve the quality of education throughout West Kalimantan.”

Plans are underway to scale this smart classroom model across the province and eventually across the nation, allowing more students—regardless of location—to learn and thrive.
