APJII Survey: TikTok Leads Indonesian Social Media Usage with 35.17% Access Rate

The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) released its 2025 Indonesia Internet Profile Survey, showing the five most accessed social media platforms in Indonesia this year.

TikTok leads with 35.17% of respondents using the app, up from 18.61% last year. YouTube follows at 23.76%, down from 27.53%, and Facebook ranks third with 21.58%, a decrease from 34.85%.

Instagram holds 15.94%, slightly lower than last year’s 16.07%, and X (formerly Twitter) stands at 0.56%, down from 0.57%.

TikTok Is the Only Platform to Grow

APJII notes that TikTok is the only platform among the top five to show growth this year.

“TikTok became the most popular social media in Indonesia,” the report states. The other platforms saw declines compared to 2024.

Gender-Based Preferences Show TikTok’s Wide Appeal

Both male and female internet users in Indonesia favor TikTok.

Among men, 32.98% said they access TikTok most often, ahead of YouTube at 26.31% and Facebook at 21.85%.

Among women, the preference for TikTok is higher at 37.55%, while YouTube and Facebook each score just above 21%.

Generational Trends Favor TikTok and YouTube

TikTok is the top choice among younger generations.

For Generation Z (born 1997–2012), 42.27% use TikTok, followed by Instagram at 25.33%, YouTube at 17.33%, and Facebook at 13.22%.

Among Millennials (1981–1996), TikTok leads with 33.40%, while Facebook and YouTube follow with 27.03% and 23.86%.

Older groups prefer YouTube. Generation X (1965–1980) favors YouTube at 31.69%, with TikTok at 28.58% and Facebook at 27.19%. Instagram is less popular at 7.15%.

Baby Boomers (1946–1964) mostly use YouTube (39.11%), then Facebook (22%) and TikTok (21.78%). Instagram use is low at 4.44%.

For Pre-Boomers (born before 1945), YouTube dominates at 45.45%, while the use of Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok each remains below 10%. Notably, 22.73% of this group were unsure of which platforms they use.

Indonesians Spend Increasing Time on Social Media

The survey shows that 34.17% of Indonesians spend 1–2 hours daily on social media.

Users spending 2–3 hours per day rose from 22.09% to 33.03% compared to the previous year.
