On October 23, 2024, the Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD) hosted a landmark workshop in Palembang, Indonesia, focusing on the importance of sustainable inland fisheries in Southeast Asia. Held at the Wyndham Hotel, this event marked IFRDMD’s decade of contributions to regional fisheries development. Titled “Decade Achievements of IFRDMD: Workshop on Best Practices in Inland Fisheries Management to Optimize Well-being,” the workshop brought together stakeholders, leaders, and experts to discuss strategies for optimizing food security through sustainable inland fisheries.
The agenda included a session dedicated to gathering expert perspectives on supporting and advancing sustainable inland fisheries. This session was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Luky Adrianto and highlighted the global “Blue Transformation” initiative, which advocates for sustainable, resilient, and inclusive aquatic food systems. Three prominent speakers shared their insights and recommendations during the session, underlining the critical role of inland fisheries in regional and global food security frameworks.
Mr. Rajendra Aryal, the FAO representative for Indonesia and Timor Leste, addressed the audience on the topic of “Inland Fisheries: The Backbone of Blue Transformation to Support Regional and Global Agri-Food Transformation.” He emphasized that inland fisheries are essential to the Blue Transformation agenda, providing a bridge between local food security and broader sustainability goals. Aryal outlined how inland fisheries contribute not only to local diets but also to regional agricultural resilience, supporting goals that align with global food security priorities.
Following Aryal’s presentation, Mr. Andi Soesmono, Chief of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, discussed policy directions in his presentation titled, “Blue Transformation Policy for Inland Fisheries Toward Aquatic Foods Security: The Prospects and Challenges for Southeast Asia.” Mr. Soesmono focused on the potential of inland fisheries to secure sustainable aquatic food sources for Southeast Asia’s growing population. He discussed opportunities for collaboration across nations to develop robust, sustainable fisheries policies that prioritize food security and ecosystem protection.
Representing Indonesia, Mr. Mohamad Rahmat Mulianda, Director of Marine and Fisheries under Indonesia’s Ministry of National Development Planning, provided a local perspective. His presentation, “Blue Transformation Policy for Inland Fisheries Toward Aquatic Foods Security: Prospects and Challenges for Indonesia,” highlighted Indonesia’s unique role in advancing the Blue Transformation. Mulianda emphasized the need for strategic resource management and policies that protect inland fisheries, acknowledging the pressures of climate change and environmental degradation.
The workshop underscored a collective call to action: to elevate inland fisheries as a crucial element within Southeast Asia’s food security and sustainability plans. Through shared insights and the exchange of best practices, the event facilitated a deeper understanding of the role inland fisheries play in supporting local communities and ecosystems. IFRDMD’s forum serves as a foundation for regional and cross-border collaborations that are essential to achieving food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development across Southeast Asia. By addressing these goals, IFRDMD aims to embed inland fisheries as a central pillar in the region’s ongoing agri-food system transformation.
