Telkomsel and Huawei Awarded for 5G Innovation in Bali's Smart Port

Telkomsel and Huawei recently received the "Innovative Mobile Service and Application Award" at the prestigious GTI Awards 2025, held during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. This accolade recognizes their successful deployment of Hyper 5G technology at Bali’s Benoa Port, a key location in Indonesia's growing tourism sector.

The GTI (Global TD-LTE Initiative) Awards celebrate groundbreaking achievements in telecommunications, with a particular focus on innovation and digital services. For Telkomsel and Huawei, the award reflects their effective use of 5G Standalone (5G SA) technology to bring ultra-fast connectivity and low latency to operational systems. This implementation aims to improve efficiency and unlock new economic opportunities, particularly within the logistics and tourism industries.

With over 2,100 5G base stations (BTS) across more than 56 cities, Telkomsel is rapidly expanding its Hyper 5G network. This infrastructure supports the development of a more connected, digitally enabled economy across various sectors, especially tourism, where the local business community stands to benefit from the technology's capabilities.

In the Benoa Port project, the Hyper 5G solution includes advanced tools such as cloud computing, AI-powered video surveillance, and TDD-FDD Dual Massive MIMO technology. These systems significantly enhance operational security, productivity, and overall port efficiency. Importantly, they also create new opportunities for Bali’s local economy, particularly in tourism-related businesses.

“Receiving this recognition is not only a triumph for Telkomsel and Huawei but also for the communities and industries that benefit from Indonesia’s digital transformation. With Hyper 5G, we are able to provide ultra-fast, low-latency connectivity that can drive efficiency in industries like logistics and tourism. We are committed to expanding this technology further to accelerate economic growth and bring Indonesia closer to its vision of becoming a digital economy leader by 2045,” said Wong Soon Nam, Telkomsel’s Director of Planning & Transformation.

Huawei’s CMO for the APAC region, Zhang Ziyan, expressed his pride in their collaboration with Telkomsel, highlighting how this partnership is reshaping industries through 5G. “This award is a testament to how 5G technology can accelerate digitalization across sectors, enhance business competitiveness, and open up new economic opportunities in an increasingly connected world,” said Zhang.

While the 5G Standalone framework is still undergoing trials, its potential to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and households is clear. By offering high-speed internet services previously unavailable, 5G will help bridge connectivity gaps. The upcoming 5G Cloud Phone service will further reduce reliance on physical devices, providing enhanced communication features and an improved user experience.

Currently, Telkomsel is continuing its 5G rollout, adding over 1,400 new BTS stations in Jakarta and surrounding areas. The company now operates more than 2,200 5G BTS across key sectors, including airports, hospitals, industrial zones, and tourist destinations. These efforts are expected to advance the country’s telecom infrastructure while fostering innovation and supporting economic growth.

The recognition at the GTI Awards strengthens Telkomsel’s position as a key player in developing an inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystem in Indonesia. As part of the company’s #PastiAdaSolusi initiative, Telkomsel remains dedicated to delivering advanced connectivity solutions that empower communities and businesses throughout the nation.
