Sustainable Palm Oil in Indonesia: ICOPE 2025’s Key Focus

The International Conference of Oil Palm and Environment (ICOPE) 2025 will take place in Bali from February 12 to 14, 2025. The event will bring together key stakeholders, including government representatives, private companies, academics, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to discuss strategies for making the palm oil industry more sustainable.

Jean-Pierre Caliman, Chairman of ICOPE 2025, emphasized that since its launch in 2007, the conference has served as a scientific forum to support sustainability in the palm oil sector. “From the government, private sector, and NGOs, everyone will bring their perspectives to achieve a sustainable palm oil industry,” he said in a statement in Jakarta (February 6, 2025).

This year’s conference carries the theme “Agro-Ecological Transformation of Palm Oil: Towards Climate- and Environment-Friendly Agriculture.” Discussions will focus on agroecology commitments, palm oil’s integration with environmental regulations, and innovation in empowering farmers.

Haskarlianus Pasang, Co-Chairman of ICOPE 2025, noted that since 2014, the conference has consistently developed solutions for implementing sustainable palm oil practices. “ICOPE 2025 will present solutions from different perspectives, including government, private sector, and NGOs,” he explained.

Irfan Bakhtiar, Program Director for Climate & Market Transformation at WWF Indonesia, stated that ICOPE serves as a platform to advance sustainable palm oil production. Meanwhile, Agus Purnomo, Director of Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, highlighted that extreme weather conditions are among the key challenges the industry faces.

“Collaboration among stakeholders is crucial to finding sustainable solutions for the future of this industry,” said Agus.

The conference will feature scientific and technical sessions covering agronomic transformation, social aspects, and financial considerations in the palm oil industry. It will also provide education for small farmers and large plantations on best agricultural practices.

ICOPE 2025 is supported by Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, The Agricultural Centre for International Development (CIRAD), and WWF Indonesia. The event aims to produce concrete recommendations for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly palm oil industry.
