Grab, Gojek, and Maxim have responded to the recent complaints from online motorcycle drivers (ojol) regarding alleged 30% commission cuts. Drivers have claimed that commissions reach up to 30%, especially during promotional periods.
However, according to katadata.co.id, the companies assert that they follow official regulations limiting commission cuts to a maximum of 20%. This is in accordance with the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation’s regulations, specifically Ministerial Decree No. 1001 and 1011 of 2022. These decrees set a 15% base commission, with an additional 5% for operational costs.
Maxim’s Director of Development, Dirhamsyah, stated that their company adheres to the 20% cap. He explained that commission rates range from 5% to 15%, depending on the fare.
Gojek also confirmed compliance with the same regulations. Gojek’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Rosel Lavina, clarified that the additional 5% is used to support various driver assistance programs. These include safety training, emergency services, and initiatives like affordable mobile plans and scholarships for drivers’ children.
Grab echos these statements. Tirza Munusamy, Grab’s Chief of Public Affairs, confirmed that the company reinvests commission fees into services for drivers. These include emergency response teams, driver lounges, and educational programs through GrabAcademy. Importantly, Grab emphasized that consumer discounts are funded separately, not from driver earnings.
Despite these explanations, some drivers continue to report higher deductions. Grab driver Ardan Fahri shared that during busy periods with promotions, cuts can reach 30%. Similarly, Gojek driver Rifaldi Sulaeman mentioned that promotions often lead to commissions higher than 20%, sometimes nearing 30%.
The Association of Two-Wheeled Action Groups (Garda), led by Igun Wicaksono, has called for government action. He reported cases where drivers experienced cuts as high as 40% and urged authorities to investigate these practices.
The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has said it will summon Grab, Gojek, and Maxim to discuss the issue. However, no meeting date has been confirmed as of now.
