The University of Indonesia (UI) has inaugurated five advanced laboratories as part of its UI-Net Zero Initiative (UI-NZI) program. Located within the Interdisciplinary Engineering (IDE) Building of the Faculty of Engineering, these laboratories aim to support the nation's energy transition, environmental sustainability, and the achievement of the Net Zero Emission target by 2060.
The five laboratories are:
- Energy Transition Laboratory (ETL): Situated on the 6th floor of the IDE Building, this laboratory comprises six sub-laboratories focusing on green energy technologies such as photovoltaics, energy storage, and green hydrogen.
- Sustainable Energy System Laboratory (SESL): Located on the 5th floor of the IDE Building, SESL supports the development of sustainable energy system models based on economic, social, and policy data.
- Electric Vehicle Testing Laboratory (EV Testing Lab): Housed in the iCELL Building, this laboratory tests the performance, safety, and efficiency of electric vehicles, including key components like batteries and electric motors, adhering to international standards.
- Environmental and Conservation Laboratory (ECL): Situated at the FMIPA UI Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building, ECL focuses on environmental conservation, ecosystem restoration, and scientific data-based natural resource management.
- Indonesia Climate Modeling and Policy Hub (I-CLIMB): This laboratory is designed to develop climate models and strategic policies to support climate change mitigation efforts in Indonesia.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by UI Chancellor Prof. Heri Hermansyah, who emphasized the university's commitment to advancing interdisciplinary research with tangible societal and industrial impacts. He stated, "What we hope is not only research output, but also the impact of all available facilities. This facility will encourage innovation through scientific publications, patents, technology, and prototype products that can support Indonesian industrialization and economy."
The establishment of these laboratories was made possible through a grant of IDR 178 billion from the Center for Higher Education (PUPT) program, provided by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. UI is among the five top universities in Indonesia to receive this funding.
Prof. Widodo Wahyu Purwanto, Chairman of UI-NZI, highlighted that these laboratories function as interdisciplinary research centers focused on energy transition, bio-conservation, and a green economy, addressing global climate change issues.
The laboratories are strategically located across various faculties within UI:
- Energy Transition Laboratory (ETL): Faculty of Engineering
- Sustainable Energy System Laboratory (SESL): Faculty of Engineering
- Electric Vehicle Testing Laboratory (EV Testing Lab): Faculty of Engineering
- Environmental and Conservation Laboratory (ECL): Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
- Indonesia Climate Modeling and Policy Hub (I-CLIMB): Faculty of Economics and Business
These laboratories are expected to accelerate the achievement of Indonesia's Net Zero Emission targets and make significant contributions to sustainable development in the country.
