OpenAI is reportedly exploring the possibility of creating humanoid robots, marking a potential return to a space it left in 2021. According to a report by The Information, two individuals with direct knowledge of the discussions revealed that the company has been reconsidering its robotics ambitions.

This development reflects OpenAI's increasing interest in advancing physical applications of artificial intelligence (AI). While the company previously discontinued its robotics division three years ago, advancements in both AI and robotics hardware may have reignited the tech giant's aspirations.

OpenAI’s financial involvement in robotics has been ongoing despite the closure of its division. The company has invested in Figure, a startup developing humanoid robots, as well as 1X, a firm specializing in advanced robotics solutions. Additionally, OpenAI has supported physical intelligence, which focuses on general-purpose AI, further indicating its broader commitment to the field.

Re-entering the humanoid robotics market, however, presents significant challenges. The industry has become more competitive, with established players making substantial progress. If OpenAI proceeds with this initiative, it may require substantial acquisitions or partnerships to bridge the gap and compete with rivals already deeply embedded in the sector.
