PT Asuransi Jiwa BCA (BCA Life) and PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) have introduced a new health insurance product called Safety Guard Critical Cover (STAR), designed to offer protection against critical illnesses (16/12). The product provides coverage for 135 critical illness conditions, alongside life protection, with a sum assured ranging from IDR 500 million to IDR 2 billion.
The launch took place at Menara BCA in Jakarta, with significant presence from BCA executives, including Haryanto T. Budiman, Director of BCA, and Christine W. Setyabudhi, President Director of BCA Life.
The introduction of STAR comes in response to an increasing number of cases of critical illnesses like heart disease, stroke, cancer, and kidney failure in Indonesia. According to the 2023 Health Profile by the Ministry of Health, the cost of treating critical diseases has been rising rapidly. For instance, heart disease alone accounted for IDR 17.63 trillion in expenditures under the National Health Insurance (JKN) system by the end of 2023.
This rise in healthcare costs has highlighted the need for financial protection, which STAR aims to address by offering comprehensive coverage. The product covers both minor and major critical illnesses and includes benefits for angioplasty procedures, intensive care unit (ICU) treatments, and death benefits. Notably, STAR also includes a unique no-claim bonus, refunding 100% of premiums paid every 10 years if no claims are filed.
STAR covers 135 critical illness conditions, split between minor and major conditions. Minor illnesses are covered at 25% of the sum assured, with a limit of two separate conditions per policy term. Major illnesses are covered at 100% of the sum assured, reducing the coverage by any previously paid claims.
In addition to illness coverage, STAR also offers benefits for angioplasty procedures, capped at IDR 250 million, and ICU care for up to seven days, with a maximum payout of IDR 250 million. The product’s death benefit ensures that the family of the insured receives 100% of the sum assured, minus any earlier payouts.
Christine W. Setyabudhi, President Director of BCA Life, explained that the STAR product addresses the growing need for critical illness protection in Indonesia. “With the increase in critical illnesses, having financial protection is essential to ease the burden of medical costs,” she said.
The eligibility for the policy ranges from 1 to 65 years for the insured, while policyholders can be aged 21 to 65 years. The policy is also available nationwide, ensuring that individuals across Indonesia can benefit from this coverage.
BCA Director Haryanto T. Budiman emphasized the importance of having financial protection against critical illnesses. He noted that while these conditions pose significant health risks, they also present a heavy financial burden due to the intensive care required. The launch of STAR is a step towards providing accessible protection for individuals and families across the country.
