Indonesia is strengthening its strategy to enter the global artificial intelligence industry through semiconductor cooperation with several countries and global technology companies, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria said during the President Club Series event in Central Jakarta (19/05).
Nezar Patria said the government is preparing the foundation for the national AI industry and digital talent development to compete in the artificial intelligence era.
“We do not want to only become a market, but we want Indonesian digital talent to master the fundamentals of AI technology and develop AI models created by the nation’s own talents,” he said.
Government Expands Semiconductor Partnerships to Support AI Development
According to Nezar Patria, the government’s efforts are part of Indonesia’s strategy to catch up in the fast-growing global AI competition.
He said the government has worked with semiconductor industries in Europe and Japan, including Arm in the United Kingdom.
Nezar Patria also said semiconductor cooperation has become a strategic issue discussed during presidential visits to several countries.
Indonesia Pushes to Enter Global AI Supply Chain
Nezar Patria stated that Indonesia has not yet become part of the main global AI supply chain.
Because of this, the government is taking strategic and rapid steps to develop the national AI industry ecosystem while strengthening Indonesia’s digital talent capabilities.
He explained that AI industry development is closely connected to the semiconductor industry, which supports modern computing technology, including GPU development and AI data centers.
“If we talk about the AI industry, we are talking about how to build the industrial ecosystem and how to prepare digital talent. These two things cannot be separated,” he said.
Natural Resources and Digital Talent Become Key AI Assets
Nezar Patria said Indonesia has major potential to enter the global AI industry because of its strategic natural resources, including nickel, cobalt, tin, silica sand, and zinc, which are needed for chip and semiconductor industries.
However, he said most of these materials are still exported as raw commodities.
“We have quite a lot of natural resources that are important for the semiconductor industry. But unfortunately, most are still sold as raw materials. Therefore, downstream industrialization becomes very important so Indonesia does not only become a technology market,” he explained.
He also highlighted strong global competition in AI development, which is currently dominated by the United States and China.
“Chips will become the determining factor whether a nation can compete in advanced technology battles such as artificial intelligence,” he stressed.
National AI Roadmap Supports Indonesia Digital 2045 Vision
During the event, Nezar Patria said the government is preparing a National AI Roadmap as a strategic guideline for Indonesia’s AI development toward the Indonesia Digital 2045 vision.
“This national AI roadmap is not only a bureaucratic document, but our social contract for Indonesia’s future technology,” he said.
