Indonesia officially launched and began operating the Nusantara Lima Satellite as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s digital sovereignty and national connectivity infrastructure in Jakarta Selatan (11/05).
Meutya Hafid said the satellite is a concrete step by the government to strengthen Indonesia’s presence in outer space and support the country’s digital transformation agenda.
“We are proud and appreciate PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara and PT Satelit Nusantara Lima. This is a historic milestone for Indonesia. With Nusantara Lima, Indonesia is showing its presence not only nationally, but also regionally. In line with President Prabowo’s direction, Indonesia must be present on the international stage, including outer space,” Meutya said during the inauguration event.
Nusantara Lima Becomes Asia’s Largest Capacity Satellite
The satellite was developed by PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara and PT Satelit Nusantara Lima.
According to Meutya, the satellite has a capacity of 160 Gbps, making it the largest satellite capacity in Asia. The government expects the satellite to become a game-changer for national connectivity.
Government Targets Equal Digital Access Across Indonesia
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs stated that more than 230 million Indonesians, or around 80 percent of the population, are already connected to the internet.
However, Meutya said the government’s main challenge is ensuring equal digital access for people living in remote regions across the country.
“We want every citizen, from Sabang to Merauke, from Rote Island to Miangas, to feel equal digital benefits. No region should be left behind,” she said.
Connectivity Must Improve Welfare and Protect Society
Meutya said the government under President Prabowo Subianto views connectivity as more than infrastructure development.
She stated that connectivity must improve public welfare and economic growth while also protecting society from digital threats.
“There is no point in building connectivity if it does not improve people’s welfare and economy. More than that, connectivity must protect our society. We are committed to protecting children from cyber violence, online gambling, radicalization, and various other digital threats,” Meutya said.
Government Strengthens Collaboration for Digital Transformation
Meutya added that the Nusantara Lima Satellite will become a strategic infrastructure to support and secure Indonesia’s national digital transformation agenda.
She also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and industry in building a secure and sustainable digital ecosystem.
“Indonesia needs smart people and brave people. PSN has demonstrated that courage. The government will continue strengthening collaboration with industry to build an advanced, secure, sovereign, and sustainable digital ecosystem,” she said.
