Indonesia is accelerating energy and mineral cooperation with Japan following a bilateral meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae (31/03) in Tokyo.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said this bilateral momentum is essential to ensure that agreements already made are quickly implemented.
"This meeting reinforces the direction of Indonesia-Japan cooperation in the energy and mineral sectors, including promoting downstreaming and the development of new renewable energy, which is a national priority," Bahlil stated.
Government Pushes Renewable Energy and Mineral Development
Bahlil emphasized that the government will ensure all signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) are converted into real projects.
"We will ensure that all signed memoranda of understanding can be immediately followed up into concrete projects, including gas development, geothermal energy, and critical mineral cooperation," he said.
The government aims to advance projects in gas, geothermal energy, and critical minerals, supporting Indonesia’s priorities in energy transition and industrial downstreaming.
Japanese Investment in National Strategic Projects
Bahlil highlighted the role of Japanese companies in national strategic projects, citing the investment of INPEX Corporation in the Masela Block gas project as a key example expected to proceed promptly.
Presidential Commitment to Clean Energy and Industrialization
President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Japan in energy and minerals as part of the country’s economic transformation.
"We also continue to invite and open opportunities for Japanese participation in the Indonesian economy, including partnership cooperation in critical minerals and rare earth. We also invite Japan to participate in Indonesia’s industrialization through downstreaming," he said.
He also stressed the importance of collaboration in renewable and nuclear energy, noting initiatives like the Asia Zero Emission Community and efforts to accelerate projects such as Legok Nangka and Sarulla.
