Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck’s AI Film Technology Startup InterPositive to Boost Filmmaking Tools

Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an AI-based film technology startup founded by actor Ben Affleck (06/03). InterPositive develops tools for filmmakers that enhance creativity without generating content from scratch.

InterPositive Team Joins Netflix

The acquisition brings InterPositive’s 16-member team—including engineers, researchers, and creators—into Netflix. The company did not disclose the value of the deal. Affleck will serve as a senior advisor, offering ongoing guidance to Netflix on AI tools for film production.

Affleck Explains AI Approach

“This is not about typing a text prompt or generating something from nothing,” Affleck said. “AI often is understood as creating something from scratch, like typing into a computer and getting a film. That’s not what we do.”

Affleck emphasized that AI tools for filmmakers should preserve the human element in storytelling. “What makes storytelling human is judgment, something that takes decades to develop and is only possessed by humans,” he added.

AI Tools Support Filmmakers’ Creative Control

Netflix plans to provide InterPositive technology to its creative partners without selling it commercially. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said the tools offer more options, control, and protection for filmmakers’ creative visions.

Elizabeth Stone, Chief Product and Technology Officer, stated that most AI video platforms are not designed for filmmakers. She explained that InterPositive tools focus on producing higher-quality content rather than making films faster or cheaper.

How InterPositive Technology Works

InterPositive builds AI models from daily production footage (dailies). These models help in post-production, such as color grading, lighting adjustments, and adding visual effects. The system also maintains cinematic rules and protects creative intent, even when production faces challenges like missing scenes or lighting issues.

Affleck said the startup records controlled production conditions to train AI models. “We hope to provide broader access to the technology we’ve built and the future we are pursuing together,” he stated.
