Indonesia‑Japan Strategic Collaboration on Energy and Industrial Technology Set to Launch Major Joint Projects

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) partnered with Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to hold the Indonesia–Japan Workshop on New Energy and Industrial Technology at Graha Diktisaintek, Senayan, Jakarta (06/01).

The workshop aims to strengthen a strategic partnership focused on applied research and industrial technology commercialization, particularly in renewable energy, digital technology, transportation, environmental solutions, and industrial competitiveness.

Government Leaders Stress Research Commercialization and Economic Impact

Minister Brian Yuliarto said collaboration with NEDO is part of Indonesia’s strategic plan to move from a natural resource-based economy to high-value products driven by science and technology.

“Today’s challenge is how knowledge and research in universities can be converted into valuable technologies that create jobs. Research directly connected to industry is key to accelerating commercialization,” he said.

Deputy Minister Stella Christie highlighted that research must support the national economy and address social and technological challenges simultaneously. “The most important thing is how we plan research to truly support the national economy. Research must answer social and technological challenges while finding the intersection between both to determine the best research to develop,” she said.

NEDO and Kemdiktisaintek Detail Collaborative Research Programs

NEDO Executive Director Kikuo Kishimoto explained that NEDO focuses on energy, global environmental issues, and industrial technology development. Indonesia is considered a strategic partner for renewable energy and future industry technologies.

“We hope this workshop helps match Indonesia’s needs with Japan’s technological strengths and accelerates concrete research collaboration through NEDO programs and funding opportunities,” Kishimoto said.

Director-General Fauzan Adziman emphasized mutual benefits in the partnership. “Indonesia gains access to deep tech, research funding, and commercialization pathways for innovation-based economic acceleration. Japan gains access to adaptive young research talent, a ‘living lab’ for industrial solutions, and strengthens its role as a strategic hub in the Global South,” he said.

Quadruple-Helix Model Strengthens University-Industry Collaboration

The collaboration uses a quadruple-helix transnational model, called the 2+2 scheme, connecting Indonesian and Japanese universities with industries in both countries.

“In this scheme, Indonesian universities receive support from Kemdiktisaintek and local industries, while Japanese universities are supported by NEDO and Japanese industries,” Fauzan said.

This model is designed to facilitate applied research, technology commercialization, and industry-ready innovation in energy and industrial sectors.

Workshop Outcomes Pave the Way for Strategic Projects

The workshop involved over 120 participants from universities, industry, government, and innovation agencies. Discussions included aligning Japanese technology with Indonesian needs, international collaboration practices, waste-to-energy development, technology commercialization, and research funding.

The forum also explored collaborations with Science Techno Park (STP) Universitas Gadjah Mada, STP Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya, Pertamina, and PLN to strengthen the connection between research and industrial needs. The workshop will support the development of five to seven large-scale strategic projects implemented collaboratively by universities, industries, and governments of both countries.
