TikTok Restores Access in Indonesia After Meeting Government Data Requirements

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has officially lifted the temporary suspension of TikTok Pte. Ltd.'s Electronic System Operator Registration Certificate (TDPSE) in Indonesia.

This decision comes after the company fulfilled the government's request for specific data regarding TikTok Live traffic and monetization during the protest period of August 25–30, 2025.

“TikTok has submitted the requested data concerning the escalation of traffic and monetization activities on TikTok Live for the August 25–30, 2025 period, through an official letter dated October 3, 2025,” said Director General of Digital Space Oversight, Alexander Sabar, on Saturday (Oct 4).

Compliance Achieved After Data Submission on TikTok Live Monetization

According to Sabar, the data submission included a daily recap of traffic escalation, monetization figures, and aggregate indicators of potentially illegal monetization activity. Komdigi conducted a comprehensive analysis and confirmed that TikTok had met its data obligations.

“Based on this compliance, Komdigi has lifted the temporary suspension of the TDPSE and reactivated TikTok’s registration as an official Electronic System Operator,” he explained.

With the license reinstated, TikTok users in Indonesia can continue to access the platform normally, including live-streaming features. The government assures the public it remains committed to maintaining a safe, healthy, and transparent digital environment.

Government Emphasizes Legal Compliance for All Digital Platforms

Komdigi reaffirmed its stance on law enforcement and its vision for a trustworthy digital ecosystem. All Private Scope Electronic System Operators (PSE Privat) are urged to comply with national regulations to ensure the sustainability of Indonesia’s digital space.

“We will continue monitoring and maintaining open communication with all PSE Privat to ensure regulatory effectiveness and digital ecosystem integrity,” Sabar emphasized.

Previously, Komdigi froze TikTok’s license due to the platform’s failure to fully comply with a data request related to TikTok Live activities, particularly during the August demonstrations. The ministry had requested detailed traffic data, live streaming activity, and monetization metrics — including the number and value of virtual gifts — amid concerns about possible online gambling content.

TikTok was summoned for direct clarification on September 16, and given a deadline of September 23 to deliver the required information.

TikTok Responds: “We Respect Local Laws and Regulations”

Following the suspension, TikTok issued a formal statement, asserting its respect for regulatory frameworks in Indonesia and its willingness to collaborate with authorities.

“TikTok respects the laws and regulations in every country where we operate,” said a TikTok spokesperson, as quoted by Antara on Saturday (Oct 4).

The company also reiterated its commitment to protecting user privacy and ensuring a safe and responsible platform experience for Indonesian users.

Despite the earlier freeze, TikTok's application remained accessible throughout the process, with content streaming and live features functioning normally.

Monitoring Will Continue to Ensure Digital Space Accountability

Komdigi's actions are grounded in Article 21 Paragraph (1) of the Minister of Communication and Informatics Regulation No. 5 of 2020, which mandates that private PSEs provide system and/or electronic data access to the ministry for oversight purposes.

“TikTok only submitted partial data regarding TikTok Live activities during the August 25–30 protests,” said Sabar, describing the reason for the initial freeze.

He confirmed that the platform’s previous response — citing internal policies and procedures for data handling — was insufficient and led to the temporary license suspension.

Komdigi's decision to reinstate TikTok’s license underlines the ministry's dual commitment: upholding national laws and fostering a safe digital economy for all stakeholders.
