Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria highlighted the crucial role of Edge Artificial Intelligence (Edge AI) in driving industrial innovation, strengthening competitiveness, and maintaining ethical standards in Indonesia’s digital transformation.
“AI today is not just technology; it has become a geopolitical power. Therefore, Indonesia must prepare a healthy, ethical ecosystem that benefits society,” Nezar said at the AI ON DEVICE Seminar Indonesia 2025 in Jakarta (24/9).
He described AI’s rapid development, from Generative AI and Agentic AI to Edge AI and Physical AI.
Indonesia’s AI Roadmap Aligned with Vision 2045
The government has prepared a five-year National AI Roadmap aligned with Indonesia Digital 2045 and Indonesia Emas 2045.
Though Indonesia is still at an early stage of AI adoption, usage has already spread widely.
Two major tasks remain: building infrastructure and developing AI talent.
“Our talent must not stop at being users. Indonesia must create AI developers and innovators,” Nezar emphasized.
Ethical Challenges and Human-Centric AI
Nezar also noted social risks from AI use, including synthetic relationships between humans and AI and potential workforce disruptions.
Several countries are considering measures such as robot taxation or human involvement in AI processes to prevent full machine replacement of humans.
“The National AI Roadmap confirms a human-centric principle. AI must be a solution, not a threat to society,” he said.
Edge AI Applications and 5G Adoption
Edge AI can deliver real benefits in health, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors, while also enhancing data resilience.
To support this, the government is accelerating 5G adoption, including spectrum auctions at 1.4 GHz and 2.6 GHz.
“Edge AI opens great opportunities when applied to concrete societal problems. Government, academia, industry, and communities must collaborate to build a sustainable AI ecosystem,” said Nezar.
