Why Starlink Indonesia Has Halted New Customer Registrations and What It Means for Businesses

PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat) revealed a queue of customers waiting after Starlink stopped accepting new customers in Indonesia. Fino Arfiantono, VP Corporate Secretary of Telkomsat, said the policy affects only new customer activations, and customers who ordered before the policy are not affected.

All Starlink resellers in Indonesia, including Telkomsat, received official notices about the service halt. Fino said, “Starlink is suspending services due to full capacity.” There remain some delayed installations caused by the suspension of new customer activations.

Official Communications and Impact on Existing Customers

Telkomsat has sent information to affected customers via official letters and other channels. Currently, Telkomsat serves more than 3,000 Starlink nodes, exclusively for corporate clients.

Starlink’s official website announced that new customers in Indonesia cannot register because capacity has sold out nationwide. Device activations from retail stores or third-party sellers are also temporarily stopped.

Starlink Business Service Supports Remote Industry Operations

SpaceX’s Starlink Business offers download speeds up to 220 Mbps with low latency in many locations. This service targets sectors such as oil and gas, mining, plantations, and offshore operations that often work in remote areas.

Besides Telkomsat, registered Starlink resellers in Indonesia include Primacom and Data Lake Indonesia.

Market Response and Expert Insights on Service Restriction

Heru Sutadi, Executive Director of ICT Institute, said if capacity is full, stopping new registrations is necessary. “If forced, consumers will suffer from services that do not meet promised quality,” he said.

Stopping new customer registrations prevents network overload and maintains service quality.

It also opens opportunities for other internet providers, including satellite and cellular services, to offer alternatives.

Prices for Starlink in Indonesia vary by package, with residential packages ranging from IDR 750,000 to IDR 5,378,000 per month.

Firdaus Adinugroho, Head of Media at the Indonesian Satellite Association (Assi), explained the law of supply and demand applies here.

“When demand is high but Starlink supply is limited, prices may increase,” he said.
