Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka announced that an AI curriculum will be included in Indonesia’s national education system starting from the upcoming academic year.
This applies to all levels of formal education: elementary (SD), junior high (SMP), senior high (SMA), and vocational schools (SMK).
“A few days ago, we held a limited cabinet meeting with the Minister of Education. In the new academic year, we will begin introducing the AI curriculum at SD, SMP, SMA, and SMK,” Gibran said during the “Creative Job Opportunity with AI” event at BINUS University, Jakarta, on May 2, 2025.
AI to Enhance Human Potential, Not Replace It
Gibran emphasized that artificial intelligence is not a replacement for humans. Instead, it is a tool that will empower individuals who know how to use it effectively.
“AI is not just for making funny graphics. It helps simplify daily tasks. Technology like AI won’t replace humans. But those who don’t use it will lose out to those who do,” he said.
He cited a student innovation from a school in BSD, where students built a coral reef cleaning robot that won a robotics competition.
Universities Recognized for Real-World AI Innovation
The Vice President praised BINUS University students for developing practical AI-based innovations, such as drowsiness detectors and games that use artificial intelligence.
“I’m very pleased to see BINUS capturing this opportunity. So, besides being able to meet future challenges, students here will be job-ready when they graduate. That’s the most important part,” Gibran said.
He also acknowledged BINUS's role in integrating AI into administration, academic systems, and curriculum development.
Government Support for National AI Ecosystem
According to Gibran, this initiative reflects the Prabowo administration’s support for science and technology, particularly in the application of AI across sectors. He encouraged students to actively participate in building a digital and AI-based ecosystem.
“I truly appreciate the innovations from BINUS University students, showing that AI is not just about high-end technology but also provides real solutions for social issues, education, and MSME development,” he explained.
Students Urged to Embrace Emerging Technologies
Gibran noted that AI is already being applied in the field, such as in Jasa Marga’s traffic monitoring during the Lebaran holiday and PT KAI’s use of AI-based face recognition cameras.
“Jasa Marga already uses AI, its team is made up of young people. They can monitor traffic across toll roads and decide when to implement one-way or contraflow systems. KAI uses advanced cameras with AI face recognition. So if there’s a thief, it can be detected,” Gibran said.
He encouraged young people to master AI and other technologies such as crypto and blockchain, reinforcing that Indonesia is rich in intelligent and creative individuals.
