The Indonesian government continues to strengthen its agricultural sector through various strategic initiatives. One of the most recent programs, the Food Brigade Initiative, has been launched in Tanjung Jabung Timur (Tanjabtim), Jambi, to increase agricultural productivity improvement and achieve national food self-sufficiency. This initiative, managed by the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) through the Agricultural Instrument Standardization Agency (BSIP), aims to enhance farming efficiency and encourage modern agricultural practices.

Encouraging Sustainable Farming Practices

The Food Brigade Initiative in Indonesia is composed of 11 youth-led agricultural groups focused on maximizing land use and improving the Indonesian agricultural development index in Tanjabtim. Their primary goal is to enable farmers to cultivate rice three times a year, achieving an IP 300 (agricultural index) instead of the traditional IP 200.

For years, local farmers have only managed to plant twice a year due to conventional farming habits. The food brigade aims to change this mindset by introducing modern farming techniques, improving land utilization, and ensuring that fields remain productive throughout the year.

Government Support and Farming Machinery Assistance

To facilitate this transition, the Ministry of Agriculture has provided farming machinery support to help local farmers increase efficiency and productivity. Some of the key agricultural tools distributed include:

• Three transplanters for efficient rice planting.
• Four-wheel tractors for improved land preparation.
• Twenty-six hand tractors to assist in plowing.

This sustainable farming program is designed to equip farmers with the necessary tools to enhance rice production and support Indonesia’s broader food security agenda.

Regional Policies to Strengthen Food Security

In addition to national support, the local government of Tanjabtim has also introduced policies to sustain agricultural growth. One notable initiative is the Local Sustainable Agricultural Land Regulation (Perda LP2B No. 18/2013), which designates 17,000 hectares of farmland as protected agricultural land.

To further support local farmers, the government has implemented a mandatory rice purchase program under Regulation No. 6/2017, which requires all civil servants (ASN) in Tanjabtim to purchase 10 kg of local rice per month. This policy ensures that 32 tons of locally produced rice are absorbed into the market every month, directly benefiting farmers.
